There's no need to be upset. I'm sure we'll have enough space to sign Patrick Patterson to the max when he's available.

DMo could still elevate his game to all-star level.

    So could Ryan Anderson.

    But it's unlikely

This extension shows a lot about the Rockets brass/ownership.

It says to me that their primary focus is keeping Harden (obviously) and keeping him happy. It also says that they are content to be competitive and are ok with not making it to the NBA finals - the moves are an admission of sorts.

We've maxed out with much potential to improve, and yet we are still far away from contention.

It's hard to see how a poor defensive team with one MVP type player and the rest at best average starters or specialists and at worst half the team could be sitting on the IR come April.

I suppose they did what they did to at least try to put the best team they could on the court. Sadly, it falls far short of a contender.

    This was a great move.

it ensures we dont get left with nothing, like lebron and durant did to their first teams, for at least 3 more years. it shows that we are willing to be loyal to our stars, which hopefully will attract another star or two.

i'm not even worried about next year's cap space. the bulls were able to move $13M by using 2 second round picks in order to sign wade. we should be able to move the likes of brewer/KJ/beverley/ariza since they are all on bargain deals.

what's important now is to show loyalty to our stars, win as many games as we can, clear cap and go for a second star next year when we might actually have a chance at rus, blake, hayward, lowry, teague, ibaka, milsapp, and gallinari.

i'd say once we're capped out (with no more big cap jumps coming to give relief), and a 30+ year old harden, if we aren't a championship level team, then it would be a fair time to trade him and go full tank/rebuild.

From a cap standpoint, max contracts next year are gonna cost you about 30m.

This extension hurts us quite a bit in the max player hunt next offseason. Its still do-able, but you would have to dump Ariza, Brewer AND Beverley.

If Motiejunas gets a deal, it probably takes us out of the running all together. I wouldn't be surprised if Houston offers Dmo a large one year deal to keep him around, but not tie up long term space.

Ryan Anderson + Eric Gordon = Max Player slot used up for 4 years.

But D'Antoni wanted them so Les approved.

Outstanding signings. People forget that Eric Gordon is a max salary type of talent. The only reason he did not get a max offer "IS" because of his injury history.

Even if healthy he's not a max talent.

BTW I do like the Harden signing.

    I think it was smart.

He's taller, much more efficient, doesn't rely solely on athleticism, won't be finished by age 30, better at getting teammates involved, and overall just a much much better all around player than Steve ever could be.

    And I loved Francis.

But they are not even in the same conversation

Guy who likes the signing says Harden's gonna be Steve Francis the 2nd and "not a real leader of a franchise". Way to show you like the signing DD lol no wonder you got heat from a lot of posters you are so inconsistent.

You can trade guys when needed. Yes, those guys just signed, but as long as they perform at the expected level, there should be a market for them.

It's gonna be hard to trade them when they are 30.

This doesn't seem like a value asset deal that morey would do

What's so hard to understand that for all the years of asset hording and can kicking that Rockets fans had to endure, some of us are not happy at all that we traded flexibility for Eric freakin' Gordon and Ryan freakin' Anderson? SPLASH!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!

Checked the BBS after a couple of days and the news surprised me. Read DD's post and said "What??" Got to your post here and thought it addressed DD's temporary brain contusion very, very well. I like the guy a lot, but Steve Francis? Not in this lifetime.

Anyway, this is great news! I've been worried about James bolting for greener pastures when he could, which wasn't far off, and now Morey has locked him up and at a salary he deserves. We have our key player in hand and at least with him the uncertainty is gone. Daryl deserves kudos for pulling it off and Harden does as well. He could have waited and gone through the whole wine and dine routine superstars always have available when they are free to do so, and ended up in a more prestigious market. Instead, he's staying in Houston to strive for a championship and he trusts us to make the Rockets contenders, a message not lost on the rest of the league.
