Depending on our roster makeup at the time, one idea I like is using the remaining portion of our MLE to sign Alan Williams to a 3 year contract in March. This is exactly how we signed Beverley back in 2013. His cap hold would be tiny since his salary would be prorated.

Here's what it could look like:

    1) Rockets sign a vet to a one year minimum deal ($947k), giving them 15 guaranteed contracts and only $613k of space below the apron.
    2) Rockets complete a 2 for 1 trade with neutral salary movement, opening up 1 roster spot.
    3) Sign Alan Williams using a portion of the remaining MLE in March.

    Nice read Bima.... Great Job!!!!

I'm still concerned with the 4.. That's still the biggest weak spot on the team..

There's really no urgency for the Rockets to add a 15th man right now. But if they have an open roster spot come March/April and can't add a quality bought out veteran, I fully expect them to add a young guy on a multi-year deal using the MLE. It would only cost/count a pittance against the cap. If nothing else, they'd have a small non-guaranteed contract to aggregate in trades come July.

This is about the first time I have seen our roster with every single player getting paid the salary they actually deserve or getting under paid. Morey if we are one of the top 3 teams this year, you deserve GM of the year, period. Great job!!

Could we keep one of these Exhibit 9 guys as a 15th man for 2-3 months without it significantly affecting our room under the hard cap to later sign a veteran, say at the $1.27 million left under the MLE?

Basically, for every day of the regular season each of those Exhibit 9 guys are on the roster, they'll count about $5,572 each against the apron calculation for hard cap purposes (the $947,276 two-year vet minimum divided by 170 days in the regular season).

We'll see how much flexibility Morey is willing to give up in order to carry a 15th man who was on a training camp deal, especially when teams are only required to carry 13 players.

    My guess is "Not Much".

Love the fact that Morey has quietly (not counting Dwight) assembled one of the nicest collections of bigs in the league.
