Can anyone explain to me why we still have Earl Boykins on our payroll?

I heard his name coming up in our salary analysis for many years now, but I have never really paid attention to that part of story.

Earl Boykins has not been on the Rockets' payroll since he stopped playing for the Rockets. His CAP HOLD had remained on the Rockets' books . . . until this past July, when his rights were renounced in order to help make room to sign Dwight Howard.

Many teams still carry the cap holds of old players who played their last NBA game with that team. So long as the team is operating over the salary cap, there is really no reason to lift a finger to file the paperwork with the league office to have that player's cap hold removed from its books. This only becomes an issue when the team subsequently wishes to utilize its cap room and can benefit from clearing out that old cap hold.

Hope this explains things for you.

Well explained, thanks Bima as always.

I am always fascinated by Morey's ability to exploit CBA rules. So I'm guessing that teams keep those cap holds to fulfill the minimum salary requirement? in order to maximized their cap flexibility?

or just hate to do the paperwork until absolutely necessary like everyone else :p

Not needed for minimum salary. Never know when a guy becomes handy in a sign and trade.

The sign-and-trade angle for most former players has been eliminated under the new (2011) CBA. Now, teams can only sign-and-trade players who played for that team during the previous season. In the Rockets' case, they would not have been permitted to sign-and-trade Boykins this summer had they not renounced his rights.

Truly remarkable to have your future picks and a stacked lineup...this would only mean that solid drafts and keeping a trio of Howard, Harden and Parsons could help this team stay relevant for a while. This can allow our team to stay young without having to mortgage the future.
