I am not sure how they know when he picked up his dribble - sure looks like he has gathered himself just has he plants his right foot down (you can see his elbows fully bent indicating he is holding something...the ball!)

 

Is it a travel? Yes
Does the league usually call such a play? No
Do players usually get away with worse? Yes

 

Refs are just saving their own ass.

What's happening people! My Top 5 plays vs the Raptors. Was pissed that we loss that cos they literally just got beat by a banged up celtics and I know we're much better than celtics! Anyways at least CP3 is back tonight, how much minutes do you think he'll get?

I see it best in 3rd of the 4 replays. Not only is his right foot planted, but the left foot is off the ground. In either case, it makes the right foot the pivot foot.

Whenever the back foot is off the ground at time of gather the next planted foot becomes pivot. Whenever the front foot is on the ground at time of gather, it can become pivot regardless of the back foot. Both situations occurred in that video.

I mean, we frame by frame these to death, but never give these superstars credit, that this isn't chance, they plan those long, lead euro steps just like that. They know exactly when the front foot will become pivot. It's an awkward way to drive by making your extended lead foot the pivot, and that's why not too many can do it, certainly not in college and HS, so it looks so much like a travel to us.

It isn't. These superstars establish the lead foot as pivot. It's not that easy to do. Try it. It's awkward, at full dribble speed.

 

Three games and four nights took its toll. We will get the next one.
