I just heard on Sporting News Radio that Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Astros will not offer Clemens Salary Arbitration , and that he will not be available to the Astros until May 1st . He also said something to the effect that Papura and Garner were both quoted as saying the club feels like they are being put in an "akward position" .

Well that certainly makes things interesting .

    hmmm

    You serious!? ****!

This is crazy, so I guess they want him to be healthy for the post season and WS.

    that's cool with me.

I'm not the only one that listens to Rick Ballou :D

I like the move, either have him sign tomorrow, or not worry about him until may. Me likes a lot. (unless he signs with someone else)

You can't blame either side on this one... Clemens knows that if the Astros offer him arbitration, the least he will make next year is 15.4 million dollars (thanks to the rule that his salary can't be more than 20% less than last years if offered arbitration), thus he didn't agree to any lesser deal before today.

The Astros obviously can't afford to pay that $15.4 million for him next year, and wanted to try to work out a more fiscally reasonable deal (probably around 10 million) to avoid the arbitration business.

Thus, the two are at a stalemate... the only problem is, the Astros need to get on with their moves if they're going to field a competitive team next year... and tieing up at least $15.4 million dollars in a guy who isn't sure if he's even going to pitch next year is a pretty risky move.

    I agree.
I'd love to have Roger back, but the Astros simply cannot sit around and wait for him to make a decision. I would also expect him to be a bit more injury prone this next season, if he does come back.

Wow, so we can't re-sign him until the 2nd month of the season? What is the point of this rule? It sounds very stupid.

    Just found this.....

The Astros are leaning toward not offering Roger Clemens arbitration before Wednesday's deadline, something that would make him ineligible to pitch for the team before May 1.
It wouldn't necessarily end his tenure in Houston. In fact, having Clemens debut in May might be best for both sides. If the Astros are willing to immediately begin spending the $18 million Clemens was due, a Bobby Abreu trade would become a greater possibility. A Manny Ramirez deal would be a real long shot, but even that would make some sense. Dec. 7 - 1:23 am et

Good move. Spend some damn money and make some trades please!!!!!!!! We need to reload. My guess is that Roger either hangs em up OR signs with us from May onwards (i know, likely guess...but I just dont see him signing elsewhere).

I'd love to see something happen....quickly!

Well, I guess if we make some good moves to acquire some quality batting with the monkey off our backs...then this will be a positive move. However, if we fail to get any quality players(i.e. off-season sucks) and we lose Clemens, then it will really suck.

I think that's what they had to do. Now it's time to go get some bats, no excuses.

I don't see this as nearly so infeasible as others do. :(

i'm not saying it's impossible. but, again...talking to those who actually know roger...i'd say it's extremely unlikely.
