To be fair, Bush wasn't smart enough for something like this. This has Cheney written all over it.

Am I being too cynical in thinking that basically every president does what Nixon did? And that Nixon just happened to be too blatant about it so he got caught?

I mean, using government power to quash dissent seems very logical for politicians to do, assuming they know how to get away with it.

I think every president does things that are wrong. I think very few committed wrong doing to the extent that Nixon did.

Yeah, setting up a dirty tricks squad to go around and do burglaries and such, basically for the explicit purpose of engaging in illegal activities to harm your political opponents - is pretty much unprecedented, before or since.

Unfortunately I don't find this that surprising considering what happened to Valeria Plame.

I think what the previous poster was speaking to was the original post. Why would a presidential candidate need to setup dirty trick squads and do burglaries when you can legally have federal agencies perform full investigations into those who dissent with your positions/policies?

In a strange way, Watergate is a testament to a political apparatus that still prosecuted corruption, even if it was taking place at the highest levels...

Coincidentally... just watched the movie Fair Game with Naomi Watts playing Valerie Plame. One of the few times that both the actress and the real-life person they portray are both bangingly good looking. The first scene with Plame in a screamingly tight skirt... oh my.

Actually Nixon did that as well, which is why in the wake of watergate laws were passed that outlawed the conduct that bush admin appears to have engaged in here .

no, he might even be worse.

either way, Bush violated so many laws in his reign, that I can't help but chuckle at this one. who didn't see this coming?

no, he just likes passing laws because it's a hobby of his. defend warrentless wiretapping here, encourage the relaxing of laws to allow easier wiretapping there, but he never intends for his administration to use it, oh no.

Anyways, rhad has an extensive topic about that---http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=166000, so I'll stop derailing.

yes, we're all familiar with rhad's thread.

you know its not easy to keep debating when you continuously change the topic. this isn't warrantless wiretapping, this is a law that allows the fbi to track internet usage AFTER A COURT ORDER.
