[CHRONIC] Rockets would like to land Cousins, but so would at least 6 other teams

    From Dick Justice....

    http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/houstonchronicle/sportsjustice/~3/JxoltGH-l3Y/rockets_would_l.html

Forgive me while I imagine how much fun it would be to have Yao Ming and DeMarcus Cousins playing for the Rockets next season. Dare I say it? Yes, dare, dare!

Are you thinking Western Conference Finals? You are? I don't know if the Rockets would be that good, but they'd be in the mix if everyone stayed healthy and most of the current core remained on the roster.

Unfortunately, DeMarcus Cousins will be long gone by the time the Rockets' pick (14th) comes up Thursday night, and that's why GM Daryl Morey has been working like crazy to move up.

He has an extra 2011 first-round pick and a lot of young talent to trade. So far, though, he hasn't found a taker. It appears Cousins will be the fifth pick in the draft.

Sacramento has that pick at the moment and appears likely to select Cousins. However, the Kings have discussed trading the pick. Things can change quickly, but the Rockets appear pessimistic they can get up to fifth.

Morey will work through the day to get something done. His first priority this off-season has been to acquire Chris Bosh, but Bosh has given no indication he's interested in playing for the Rockets. Free agency is uncertain in the best of circumstances, so if Morey can make an impact acquisition in the draft, he'll do it.

If he stays at 14, or moves up only a few spots, his decision will be whether to take the most talented player, or the player that helps the Rockets the most. The Rockets need size.

Kansas center Cole Aldrich is mentioned in several mock drafts, including ESPN's. Baylor's Ekpe Udoh, another shot-blocker, is another possibility. Almost as interesting will be seeing what Morey does in the second round. Last year, Leslie Alexander gave him the go-ahead to spend $6 million on three second-round picks: Chase Budinger, Jermaine Taylor and a Euro.

Budinger had a very good rookie season, and Taylor showed flashes of being special. The Rockets have less pressing needs this summer in terms of numbers, but that could change depending on if he's able to make a trade.

i dont see it happening. the teams at the top of the lotto aren't motivated sellers. the wizards, sixers, and nets are happy with their choices of draftees. the wolves are looking to trade jefferson probably in preparation for having to draft a big if turner and johnson are off the board. and the kings want cousins. so much for that.

I haven't seen any flashes of Taylor being "special' so i hope they don't hang their hats on that.

I am pretty sure Wolves want to get rid of Jefferson no matter who they draft.

The guys is going to be dumped for expiring contracts and very little else.

Try watching all regular season games, JT did have some spurts at attacking the rim, just needs to learn Adelman's offense.

What about double figure scoring in all of his starts.

I am not a Big fan of Justice. He tends to steal ideas or rumors from other people's articles. He does not have any credibility when it comes to talking sports. He tend to make up a lot of BS.
I am sure Morey like to move up but Minnesota is the only realistic chance for us to get in the top 5. The cost maybe very high to get #4 pick. Most likely we had to take Al Jefferson off their hands. He still has 40+ million (3 yrs) remaining on his contract. Oouchh!!!

I used to feel the same way about him until I started listening to him on 1560. I think he's actually getting better than before. He's starting to get the big picture when it comes to Rockets information. He does bring a lot of hind sight on what Morey wants to do.

Jt is a strong competitor that can score very quickly with the ability to play pesty defense. I see promise the only thing holding him back is his IQ and adapting to the NBA and Adelman offense, but another should help that.

You've built up the hype in your own mind. The stories and rumors are just that. Morey is trying but is just as likely to trade back for something extra in return as trade up - just not as interesting a rumor.

If all they do is staynpat and select a player, that could be great give Moreys track record at drafting thus far.

I am pretty sure now this is a smokescreen. When was the last time Morey told anybody his target?

we'll see. i think if they get johnson and another wing in the first round they make a go of it again this season.

if the nets go with johnson, cousins might be too much to pass up. in that situation i think they move jefferson to make room for cousins.

by the way did you figure out what you're doing for draft tickets?

I know the wolves want to dump him, but I'v heard that Kahn overvalue's him. If they are dumping for expiring contracts, that's an easier pill to swallow than Elton Brand I think.

All of this talk about Cousins makes me believe that the Rockets have ZERO intention of ever going after him...

Too much noise...I don't believe they want him anymore.

Morey's pretty blunt with his statements to the media. He confirmed that he tried hard to move up last year, but no teams were biting. I know he got Budinger, but I'd like to hear him say "Everything went exactly how I wanted it to this year."
