CORPUS CHRISTI — The new star of the Corpus Christi Hooks minor league baseball team will never hit a home run, but he's a bona fide major leaguer in one way: salary.

Multimillionaire pop star Justin Timberlake will portray fictional Hooks player Carlton Garrett in the upcoming movie "The Open Road." The six-time Grammy winner recently tried to meet in Austin with actual players of the Astros' Double-A team, but schedules didn't align.

"Justin wants to portray what it's like playing for the Hooks, playing for an Astros minor league team and playing at Whataburger Field," Hooks president J.J. Gottsch said.

But the 27-year-old Timberlake won't be at Whataburger Field anytime soon. Shooting began Tuesday in Hammond, La.

"The Open Road" is the story of a young man trying to reconnect with his father — a legendary athlete, played by Jeff Bridges — as he struggles to get home to his ailing mother. Mary Steenburgen and Kata Mara are also in the film.

Writer-director Michael Meredith, the son of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith and a former University of Texas at Austin student, drew on his Texas ties for the concept, Gottsch said.

While most of the real Hooks are preparing for spring training, Gottsch remained hopeful that a handful of players may be able to consult with Timberlake — No. 31 in the movie — about his role.

Last year, Timberlake voiced a character in the Mike Myers opus, "Shrek the Third." His other film credits include "Model Behavior" (2000), "Edison" (2005), "Black Snake Moan" (2006) and "Alpha Dog" (2006).

Yes, I've been waiting for someone to really explore what it's like to play at legendary Whataburger Field.

I can't wait for the upcoming, Ken Burns produced, documentary on Taco Cabana stadium.

I agree AB,Even though I'm not crazy about the guy,he's evolving into a decent actor....seems to be taking his craft more seriously.

Speaking of the haunting Alpha Dog.Emille Hirsch is just one talented dude.

Into the Wild was a little disappointing comsidering the folks involved..The cinematography could have enen been better.Maybe I just had high expectations.

In Perralta's Lord's Of Dogtown,Emile at a young age was already showing bigtime talent.

That you know of. You just can't SEE most of the tattoos because they're covered by the uniform.

Yes,I know it used to be that way because I played.
Now,some guys have them, but not on a scale with Timberlake.
Like I said,he has evolved into a pretty fair actor.Alpha Dog was a big jump for him.

    BUT....Our National Pastime shouldn't be about tattoos,steroids,etc.

Think back to a purer and more more wholesome time.....Remeber what growing up back then was like.
We didn't see Enos,Cesar,JR,Scotty,Noilie, etc. pulling that crap.

You know why because baseball still stood for all that is right about America.

Instead we have this microcosm of society that is generally accepted.

    Disgusting

Baseball was cleaner and so was life in general.

Yes,the media was not involved to the degree they are now,so many things were hushed up,but the openly ACCEPTABLE behaviour in the pursuit of the almighty dollar is out of control on all fronts. The integrity of the game and life has been compromised.

That said,I'm diving back into my first love with a gusto.

Time for the season to start.

I really feel that public awareness for the average fan has been raised due to the high profile proceedings over the last few years and has had a cleansing effect.
