rockets fault for not matching whatever other offer he gets if he leaves. he won't leave if he is offered the same contract.

I don't think there is any ill feelings here at all between Yao and Management. I think if it were not for the new labor agreement that is coming soon Yao would not even be considering this. Having said that, if he can get a better deal by doing something now as apposed to next summer then why not? The problem is that after he opts out (if he opts out) will he be able to command enough on the open market to make it worth his while to opt out. Remember that a new team can only offer him a 5 year deal and can only give him 10% raises. If Yao stands pat he will get a 10.5% raise this year. I think the more likely scenario is that the Rockets offer to extend his contract for 3 more years beyond the current one which has 1 more year left on it at a 10.5% raise a year. In this scenario Yao would get a larger salary but for 1 less year than anyone else could offer. That scenario also keeps the Rockets from having to give him a 6 year contract starting next summer.

Net gain for Yao would be that he gets to benefit from the current CBA which would likely allow him to earn more money going forward and the benefit for the Rockets is that they would save a total of 2 years worth of commitment to a high dollar player.

If Yao opted out, I'd expect to see a triumvirate of he, Calvin and Bill Worrell calling the games -- with Clyde catering fixin's for the crew. ;)

I don't see many people say he deserve it.

I see a lot of people say he will get it because of the nature of business and the priority of the NBA team owners (revenue, revenue and revenue).

Are you capable of telling the difference?

Personally I don't think any NBA player is technically worth that much money. However, I am a big believer in the Free Enterprise system and if the market says you are worth that much or you can negotiate that much for yourself then more power to you.

The only problem with the free NBA market is that sometimes a rogue GM can skew prices for short periods by giving a ok player huge money, and then that creates a panic/ domino effect.

    Dear Yao.

It has nothing to do with being greedy. It's all business. Does anyone blame Rockets or any NBA team gettting every penny worth from each player? Would any NBA team show any sympathy in term of $ negotiation when a player is injured, regardless whether he plays his heart out?

Yao might be overpaid in term of basketball impact. He is not if you talk about investment return.

When you talk business, don't take personal attack.

If it's strictly for the chinese business, we can get Yi for cheap.

Yi made more chinese money for his owner, than an injured Yao riding pine has made for Les.

Yao aint going nowhere! He is gonna stay here as long as Les is the owner. I would be shocked if he wasn't a Rocket next year.

Yao probaly has looked at the roster and has seen a bunch role players like hill, battier, budinger, scola, lowry and thinks, i might be better served to opt out now and sign with a legit contender to get a ring. he knows he probaly has 2 good years left in him at best with his body breaking down.why not sign with the spurs, cavs or dallas for less and go for a ring. lets face it, brooks is good, but he is'nt a superstar. martin is good, but the guy is a great player off the ball. he cant create jack with the ball. a great role player at best.
