No kidding. I'm paying off all my debts, buying a house and a car, investing the rest and living off the interest.

Don't you have the option to stay anonymous if you win?

 

i think one can find that loophole by hiring a lawyer and financial planner and creating a trust. but, it clearly states that if you win, they have the right to use your name and picture for publicity purposes. the problem is, these winners are so happy about winning that they don't stop to think about any of it. they just want the money and want it now.

 

I think the only problem is the false advertising. Publishing the pre-tax number is okay, since we list everything pre-tax in this country. But, if they were honest, they'd just tell you the present value of the cash-flows, instead of getting people excited about millions in value they won't actually receive.

My dad has an elaborate plan for when he wins the lottery. He's worked out all the math, the interest he plans to earn, who he's going to give money to, how much, and what he's going to buy. Of course, he doesn't actually play the lottery very often.

I'd probably give money to a number of people ($10 would be going in the tipjar for sure! ), but I would not be lending anyone anything. It's best to leave that to the professionals.

i believe they can use your name all they want but you can refuse the picture.

as stated, a lot of people who win just aren't ready for the responsibility of that much money. their addictions triple or quadruple and their friends probably weren't that great to begin with. this guy was already very successful but his vices got the better of him.

Maybe not the lung cancer, but the I heard the story of his granddaughter's drug addiction. Form what I remember, it happened because they gave her money whenever she wanted, let her drop out of school and hang out with losers, and basically gave her no boundries. Her drug addiction was an indirect result of his winning the lottery.

 

well she was just stupid. I wish my dad would just throw cash at me whenever i wanted. I guarantee i wouldnt be hanging around those losers, getting hooked on drugs. then again im 26 , and know better.

people like to critize rich kids like paris hilton , saying they never worked for what they got. well if my dad owned a huge franchise i wouldnt work either. I dont hate rich kids for flaunting their parents' money. i just dont wanna hear or see it, cause it depresses me

 

Can't you say something like you are in the Witness Protection Programme and if people see your name or face- the mob will come after you, punch you in the nuts.. etc..

 

I know a bunch of kids who grew up filthy rich. I'm talking upwards of 50M and one of them grew up having a dad worth 5B. Anyways, none of them turned out to be screw ups or getting lost in drugs or alcohol. Most of them went to good schools, and even went to graduate school. I think it has to do with parent upbringing more than anything.

 

I like the way Kiyosaki puts it: Money is just an amplifier. It just amplifies your current situation. If you're already a happy, well grounded and prudent person, then money will make you happier and wealthier. If you're a miserable person with lots of vices, money will make those vices bigger and make you more miserable. If you're an irresponsible sloth, $100 million dollars might make you rich for a short while, but you'll end up poorer and way more debt-ridden than when you started.

i bet if they did good luck stories of wealthy people, we would feel kinda miserable also.

I read alot on wealth and prosperity. The overwhelming theme was that poor people who had a wealthy mentality were able to become rich with nothing. Of the rich ones that experienced bankruptcy, they were able to regain all their wealth and more money within a few years. Where as poor people, that came into alot of money from a lottery or inheritance, most lose it all within 6 months to a year of the last payment. They are more likely to come down with depression than people who didn't come into large amount of money. The pressure and stress was just too much to handle. I am not sure if I could handle winning the lottery, I'll just build up my wealth, nice and slow, like most millionaires. Most millionaires aren't on tv, but live quietly. A good book is "The Millionaire Next Door".
