Tempest in a "D cup?" Yao Ming declares, "I'm OK."

A few days ago, while reminiscing about the All-Star games over the years of Yao Ming's career, I mentioned that he must never feel the need to check the voting results. He knows when each season begins that the All-Star break will offer no break. He'll be there.

"I told you before the season," Yao cracked, "my goal was to play all 82 games."

Including the All-Star Game in Phoenix, he is on that pace, having missed one game in November when the Rockets held him out with an abundance of caution after he came up with some soreness in his left foot.

That number is threatened now, with Yao forced to leave Friday's game at halftime with a bruised right knee. He banged knees with Jeff Foster in the first minute and with Shane Battier late in the first quarter. He played five minutes in the second quarter, tried to come out for the second half and then retreated to the locker room.

X-rays were negative. Yao seemed greatly relieved.

"I'm OK," Yao said. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow. It was just a knee-to-knee hit. It was not just today; the last 10 games, I got a couple hits on the same spot. It felt a little bit funny after the first play. The X-ray showed the bone is fine. I did (worry) before the picture came."

A better indication, however, might have been another joke overheard in the Rockets' locker room.

After Yao finished his interviews and waited for his teammates to ice and shower and head for the bus, someone (I don't know who, or OK, I do know who, but I promised not to say in exchange for freedom to steal an overheard quote) pointed at Yao's left knee and said, "That one's an 'A' cup.'

Then, pointing at the sore right knee, he said, "And that one's a 'D' cup.

For those of you unfamiliar, that does indicate that Yao's right knee was pretty swollen.

That the joke drew only laughs indicated more.

It demonstrated that the injury was not serious.

These things happen. When they happen to the Rockets, it is easy, even inevitable to think the worst. They get hurt. A lot. This time, however, Yao's injury is considered no worse than 'day-to-day."

The guess here is that Tracy McGrady will be back on Sunday, Ron Artest next Wednesday. Yao likely will miss no more than one game, maybe none, maybe two.

At least the Rockets have not lost their sense of humor.

    BAN PKBOY...

Just kidding! Someone had to say it.

Thank goodness it's just "banged" up. Hopefully he can just sleep it off.

He may need to sit a small bit to let the swelling go down....don't want to make it worse.

If it's really swollen that bad, it doesn't sound like nothing.

I googled "knee swelling" and found this: http://orthopedics.about.com/od/hipknee/a/kneesymptoms.htm

Swelling of the knee is common with several different knee problems. When there is swelling immediately after an injury (within an hour), the most common causes are an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament or a fracture of the top of the shin bone. When swelling develops gradually over hours to days, the injury is more likely a tear of the meniscus or a ligament sprain.

    Any doctors around here?

No, I haven't learned to read yet. I'm still working on it.

Can x-rays pick up ligament damage? I read in another thread that is why he's going to get an MRI.

My main point is that if it truly is that swollen, it doesn't sound like nothing.

Here you go, Dr. Johnty: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=4182033&postcount=68

X-rays don't show ligament or tendon damage according to a couple of CFs in that thread.

I guess the X-ray was only to check the bone, not stuff like his ACL.

So the question is: Can you read or do you think you're a doctor since you are basically saying that the x-ray is the tell all test?

    Try reading this again:

Swelling of the knee is common with several different knee problems. When there is swelling immediately after an injury (within an hour), the most common causes are an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament or a fracture of the top of the shin bone. When swelling develops gradually over hours to days, the injury is more likely a tear of the meniscus or a ligament sprain.

If those other CFs are right, the x-ray didn't rule out ligament damage. And if that site is accurate, the swelling could be the sign of something more serious than we want to believe.

cant most doctors tell if theres ligament damage just by playing with the joint,,,i saw the trainer moving yaos knee around and he mst have determined there was no significant ligament damage...i mean he should still have the mri, but im not worried.

Didn't those same doctors tell McGrady last season that his knee was OK only to find out a few months later he needed arthroscopic surgery?

I'm with you. It just doesn't sound promising with that much swelling. My hope is that if the MRI does show some damage that the damage is minimal. Of course, finding some other less serious explanation for the massive swelling would be the best case.

I guess to prepare for the worst, it's good we at least have a true C to fill in for Yao. He should be able to give us 15-20 mpg if Yao needs a few weeks off. We had plenty of success last season with Deke filling in. We also have McGrady and Artest coming back for what that's worth.
