Lottery- (top-14) protected through 2016. If the Rockets don't make the playoffs at all by 2016, then New Jersey instead receives Houston's 2017 second rounder and cash.

We better not be flushing these picks just because we owe Brooklyn and DMo is coming over. Morey falls in love with the Kansas and Kentucky mystiques in the last two drafts and we're stuck with two let's-wait-and-see's.

Unless we want B. Lopez, I don't see helping NJ.

Hope we don't think we're getting Dwight. That would take Morey's every waking hour, and we'll miss out anyway and wind up making a Camby-esque trade again.

Nah, we'll trade up in this draft or trade for a significant roster upgrade.

Caveat emptor, Morey: Do NOT give the picks to the Lakers for Gasol.

I think you and I are of the same mind. I don't expect to trade into contention. I just want to trade for some hope -- a franchise player to build around for the future. If we get a top veteran that we need a couple of years to put role-players around, that works. If we get a rookie-contract guy that needs a couple years of seasoning, that's fine too. If Morey pulls a magical trade that makes us immediate contenders, who am I to complain? The only thing I don't want to see is another season like the last one -- McHale valiantly trying to win as much as possible with good-but-not-great players.

They would like to package the picks and assets to move into the lottery or to acquire a franchise player like Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol or perhaps Chris Bosh, should he become available. If the Rockets have their way, the mock drafts you see a week before the draft, or for that matter an hour before the draft, will be entirely wrong.

They want to move. They’d like to move up, as they did last season with their second of two first-round picks, giving up a future pick just to move up three spots to get Donatas Motiejunas. Failing that, they would prefer to move their second first-round pick to have one in another season rather than to have two more this season.

Still, there could be some very interesting names still around should the Rockets be on the clock with their usual 14th pick and again two picks later.

Every conversation about the draft in general and the Rockets’ picks specifically seem to begin with something like, “they won’t use both picks anyway, but…”

But the odds are that they will make at least one pick as currently scheduled. The Rockets would love to move up a lot, but general manager Daryl Morey said on Thursday that such a large move is unlikely. There is a chance, however, that with so many players after the top six fairly equal compared to most seasons, the teams in the middle of the first round, including the Rockets, can get one they would have taken much higher.

“I think it’s always hard,” Morey said of making a significant move up in the draft. “I think teams fall in love with who they might get so it’s very hard, unless you’re already top-10, to move within the top-10. I think if there is a move up option it will be for a couple spots versus a big leap. We would like to move quite a bit up but I think that’s unrealistic.

“The nice thing is that after maybe the first three-to-five guys, it’s pretty flat. We could easily get someone who we might rank six or seven at 14, just because it’s very unpredictable after the first three-to-five picks in this draft.”

That is what they did a few seasons ago when they had Patrick Patterson at No. 6 on their board, tried to move up to get him and then found him still available at 14.

Keep a few things in mind. The Rockets will not consider their roster needs. They strongly believe that it is best, especially where they are slated to select again, to pick the best prospect they can get. The way they have crowded the roster with young prospects in recent years, they probably can afford to gamble on unpredictable, high-reward prospects.

Movement has picked up a lot in recent days, but a week before the draft, here’s a mock draft that makes picking at 14 and 16 seem a lot better than when the season ended
