    So am I.

I also think the people flipping out was an overreaction.

However, you would think the model UN would actually model the UN.

And the OP said that everyone knows that Taiwan is a sovereign nation. They may be in practice, but the United States doesn't recognize them as being sovereign and neither does the United Nations.

I also like your point about Palestine. If Jewish students had left because the Model UN had Palestine listed as a sovereign nation you'd have a light of right wing people bashing the model UN, not the students.

doesn't really matter what it's listed

one group is going to be mad about it

I would imagine some Taiwanese students would be outraged too if it wasn't listed as a country.

Whoa.... Isn't China part of Taiwan. I might be behind the times on that one.

Well, you have to choose a system. They went with the "map system." As KingCheetah has mentioned previously on this BBS, maps show Taiwan as a separate country, with its own shading color.

    This makes it official.

It was a private, invitational event and they were being disruptive.

If Taiwan were considered part of China, it would vastly increase their claims to international waters, much like the Spratleys.

The strange thing is, they were separated in a civil war between two entities that don't really even exist anymore, there are no communist in China and no Chinese Nationalist in Taiwan. It's now just Chinese plutocrats versus Taiwanese Plutocrats.

Wait what? Taiwan is a real place. I thought it was just a cover up created by the US government. A place they could attribute for the creation of really crappy trinkets so we didn't realize they were really made in America. Thus strengthening the "Made in the USA" brand.

This one really hits close to home for me, as the coffee stirrer I used and discarded this morning was made in Taiwan.

I would have finished the coffee that I stirred with a stirrer from China. But I died.

Taiwan has always been a part of China because both governments wanted to be China. It wasn't until the 90s when Taiwan became democratic that recognition became a hot issue.

Both sides are more or less fine with how things are going, but politics can easily change when the economy sours.

    They're YOFs homey.

That was like 25 years ago.

Trinkets you see comes from China because it's cheaper. Taiwan ships electronics like laptops, chips, and memory.

Maybe in practice they don't exist but the Chinese Communist Party is very active and let's people know it and still plays a big role in society. At the 2008 Earthquake Memorial Museum I was surprised at how many hammer and sickle flags were there along with many mentions of the active role of the party in the recovery and even noting that the rebuilding after the earthquake was a triumph of socialism.

While there probably are very few in Taiwan who still harbor the dream of the KMT controlling all of China the party is back in power and don't seem to be willing to drop their name anytime soon.

Puerto Rico has had votes on independence a couple times but it's doubtful most Americans could find it on a map anyway.

I dont understand. Is Taiwan a member of the actual United Nations? No, right? Then why should it be in a organization based on it? If I were to make a replica of the Eiffel Tower, but decided to stick a British flag on top, would that be accurate?

Thank-you B-Bob -- here is another illustration of what you are talking about...

Taiwan is clearly a distinct, sovereign nation -- why else would cartographers use unique colors if it were a part of China?
