I lived in a poor black neighborhood before. I feel less safe in a poor white neighborhood.

 

I would definitely agree that the Hispanic violence in Chicago is similar to black violence because of urbanization and poverty

 

A lot of times in the case of Chicago, that is not true.

 

Yes, urbanization and poverty play a role........ as does the incredible number of street gangs. In Chicago, through the 1960's there were a lot of white street gangs that wielded a lot of control over the neighborhoods. That changed because of the expressways that were built, which resulted in white flight. The one consistency is the actual neighborhoods themselves which have consistently had gangs for over 100 years in Chicago.... be they white, black or hispanic.

I will be curious to see if the number of gang members and violence associated decreases in Hispanic area as they acculturate, as it did with Italians and Irish.

A lot of the increased violence in black areas of Chicago is directly connected to street gangs that control the drug trade in their neighborhoods.

 

Well, the black poverty rate is about two and half times greater than the white poverty rate and the black murder rate is four times that of the white murder rate.

Unless you find a study that directly shows that the murder rates between whites and blacks is similar, we'll have to work with that basic analysis.

The combination of poverty and women-headed households is difficult to overcome. Most adolescent boys join gangs in search of male energy that is missing at home. As Hispanic households become more and more headed by women, which is happening, gang membership will continue to rise regardless of accultaralization. Italians and Irish were able to maintain their households intact.

I'm going to defer a little to JumpMan on the fact a lot of black on black violence stems from poverty PLUS lack of fathers. Its ironic that poor whites have a domestic violence problem while their homes still have fathers.

I still believe black people have a self esteem problem manifested in different ways. Poor whites don't resort to crime. I said in another thread that blacks have to get over the wealth disparity because we get caught in the materialism in this country defining us.

The self hatred I speak of comes from our history and the resulting wealth gap. One issue stems from the other but they are separate issues.

Poor whites have more of a comfort being American. I think the domestic issues in poor white homes stem from education and religion
