Chargers, Raiders propose to share stadium in Carson, CA

Mark Davis, the team’s owner, apparently has a parcel of land in New Braunfels, and the location, in between San Antonio and Austin, could tap into two cities for corporate support. This idea flared up after the Raiders were denied a chance to move to Los Angeles. Adding fuel to the fire, the Raiders play in an old stadium in disrepair, the city of Oakland has rejected proposals to build something new and the Raider lease is up.

But it's a nice offset.

 

St. Louis already had funding ready to go. They already have corproate/PSL support, with established infrastructure for having a team play there. They just happened to be owned by a recluse owner/businessman that had zero ties to the area and clearly saw the financial benefit (franchise value) of having a team in LA no matter what St. Louis was ready to deliver.

That, along with the likely contentions from influential/powerful owners (Jones/McNair) makes San Antonio/central texas unlikely even with a sound stadium plan (which there is none yet).

 

St Louis did not have funding ready to go.

 

Yes, they basically did (laid the groundwork for everything else... they didn't lose the Rams because of a lack of progress there).

They got a law changed that would have made a referendum/public vote unnecessary, and it passed city approval.

They needed the Rams/Kronke to sign off on this to get the rest of the funding finalized... but as I said, they were committed to LA regardless of what St. Louis put together.

Yes they did.

The owner wanted out because LA is a elite market.

Also the owner is a real estate developer and he has bought a large amount of land around the new stadium in LA and wants to develop it... as it is what he enjoys doing.

Exactly... big markets should have teams.

LA should have never lost their team to begin with.

Oakland/Tennessee/Jacksonville are all questionable markets that have been able to support a team fine (provided the stadium is continuously updated)... so Central Texas (provided they get past the stadium hurdles, the PSL hurdles, the corporate hurdles... and eventually the direct competition between Dallas' market hurdles), would have a chance to support a team in the future.

Moving from those sort of markets to LA is a no brainer... moving within those markets are lateral moves. Moving from a big market like Houston to a podunk market like Tennessee was a idiotic move... coming from a franchise that continues to make idiotic moves like retaining Mularkey as their coach.

 

they made it to the Superbowl though. I haven't been to Nashville in a long time, but I liked it out there.

I'm all for San Antonio getting a team, Jones and McNair may learn what it takes to win. Spurs have been the class of Texas sports for years.

 

They made it to the Super Bowl 15 years ago :grin:

They have ownership issues right now, and the league is trying to force a sale. Their attendance dipped significantly this last season, and fans and media there are pissed off at the hiring of Mularkey. Their stadium is among the worst in the league.

 

Their franchise value is a fraction of what it would be in Houston (with a better owner).

Odds are there will be more threats for them to relocate once their lease starts to come to an end.... especially after you consider what the Rams just accomplished by moving out of a smaller market (franchise value close to 3 Billion?!?).

 

The Titans relocating would be such sweet poetry.

 

Where would they go, though? London? San Antonio? Toronto? Portland?


I'm for it, by the way. Especially if they change their names.

 

London would give Goodell a mega boner.

San Antonio would be in play (holy CRAP that would make for a great rivalry), along with Portland and St Louis. You might even toss in Birmingham and Salt Lake City.

Not sure Toronto makes the cut.

Not sure if you meant Birmingham, Alabama or England? Alabama, and it'd be the second smallest market in the league (after Green Bay...population wise). I don't think you move for that, and I don't know if they support that.

Well Los Angeles is the biggest fish, there's no other market out there that close except for London.

I don't think they'll move. I do think they need to make their uniforms nicer, same with the Ravens.

 

If the goal is to move to a place where the franchise is worth the most money (and that is the goal) then London and Toronto would be the two markets that would GREATLY increase the value of the franchise. The value of the team would literally double/triple over night.

The problem with London is the logistics of being so far away, but because they only play once a week it is possible. The NFL is fairly popular among the 40 and under class in England/Ireland. A team in London would really have fans all over the UK.

The problem with Toronto is that the Buffalo Bills will do everything in their power to prevent it. A lot of Bills fans are from Toronto. Football is very popular in Canada.

Bud Adams was greedy and short sighted, and fell into the same hole that other owners did. They felt that income and power would come from stadium size/value. They moved their clubs to less desirable spots because they got $100,000,000 -$200,000,000 stadium financing, thinking that was big money.
