Celts sign undrafted West Virginia star Pittsnogle
    Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Free agent Kevin Pittsnogle has signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics, his agent said Wednesday.

Will Kevin Pittsnogle ever be a useful NBA player?
    Yes
    No
Pittsnogle, a 6-foot-11 center who is West Virginia's career 3-point leader, was passed over in June's NBA draft along with Mountaineers teammate Mike Gansey. Both played for the Miami Heat in a summer league, and Gansey signed a two-year deal with the Heat.

Pittsnogle led the Mountaineers with 19.3 points per game last season and was named to the All-Big East first team. He led West Virginia to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.

"Clearly, Kevin's strength is extending defenses with his range. He's big enough and he's got a quick trigger," agent Dan Tobin said. "He's a unique player, somewhat of a specialist at this point. We're trying to expand other areas of his game and I think that's what's going to help him make the transition."

Pittsnogle made 253 career 3-pointers and his 41.1 percent 3-point accuracy rate ranks second in school history. He is sixth in career scoring with 1,708 points.

Do the words "West Virginia" and "star" ever really go together in a sentence?

He won't make it in the NBA. He is out of shape, slow, and horrible on defense. There is a reason he was undrafted.

No Raef is a decent rebounder and a good shot blocker. All Pittsnogle can do is shoot.

that doesnt make him a good defender ... you can be a good rebounder, make some blocks, if you're slow you're in trouble ... and he's not a good shotblocker anymore and has never been a good rebounder (career : 6.6rbds/g in 28min/g). (but pittsnogle has not proved anything yet, and lafrentz is a useful player)

Undrafted players can now go to the NBDL and grow into NBA players, it will help them a lot in their development.

    Jerry West

Jerome Alan West (born May 28, 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia) has had one of the most successful careers ever in professional basketball, first as a player, then as a coach and finally as an executive. He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980, and his dribbling silhouette has long been used in the National Basketball Association's official logo.

Like most NBA players, West was a standout in high school and at college, attending West Virginia University and leading it to the 1959 NCAA championship game (of which he was named Most Valuable Player) before embarking on a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also played for, and co-captained with Oscar Robertson, the 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medal team in Rome.

His nicknames included "Mr. Clutch", for his skill and ability to make a shot in a clutch situation, and "Zeke from Cabin Creek", given to him by teammate Elgin Baylor, and one West was not particularly fond of. The latter name is somewhat of a misnomer, but not completely; Cabin Creek is the name of both a stream and a community near West's hometown of Chelyan. The community of Cabin Creek is on the opposite side of the stream from Chelyan as it enters the Kanawha River.

On November 26, 2005, his number 44 became the first basketball number to be retired by West Virginia University. His son Jonnie West signed to play basketball with WVU in 2006.
    Early life and sports

Jerry West attended East Bank, West Virginia High School from 1952-1956. He was named an All-State from 1953-56, and an All-American in 1956, when he was also named West Virginia Player of the Year after becoming the state's first high-school player to score more than 900 points in a season (32.2 ppg, 1956). He also led East Bank to a state championship that same year.

He played for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, in Morgantown, West Virginia, from 1956-1960. Among his college highlights, he was named to the All-Southern Conference (1958-60), All-American Second Team (1958), and The Sporting News All-America First Team (1959-60). In his WVU career, he averaged 24.8 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.

In addition to the Olympic Games, he was a member of the United States' Pan American Games gold medal-winning team (1959).....

All big guys that shoot 3s, shoot them way too much.

Yao could probably shoot 3 pointers as well as most 7 footers that go long distance, but thankfully he's not stupid enough to ignore the fact that he's a giant and waste time camping outside the 3 point line.

Mango, you beat me to it. I was also thinking Randy Moss, even though he is a football player. But I think Jerry West is the best name here.

Somewhere on a Celtics fans BBS, hordes of posters are filling a Pittsnogle thread with a one-word post. "Splash."
