    I like a hard cap,4 yr contracts and nothing guaranteed past yr 3. I think more important is the floor and cap along with the revenue sharing. If the floor was 93% of the bri, we wouldn't see the clippers or some of the other teams with a 45m payroll on a 58m cap. Set the cap at say 68m, that would mean the cheap teams would have to spend about 65m which would make everyone committed to winning. That way, teams like lakers and knicks would see their contributions just saved and put in owners pockets.

    Take a look at the graph below:

    The red area is shows how much concession the players made in making their initial counteroffer.

    The brown area shows how much the league gave up in switching from the initial offer to the $62 million "flex cap"

    The big bright green area is the size of the gap remaining between the two sides.

    Also, the curve going right through the middle of the bright green area is the player salary level it would take for the league to break-even if both its revenues and non-player costs grow at the same rate (here, I am assuming 4%).

    Q. What happens in a lockout?

    A. All contact between NBA players and the teams ceases. No communication. No use of team facilities. No contracts signed. No free-agent shopping. Players still owed salary for the 2010-11 season will continue to receive payments but other benefits (insurance) are suspended.

    Q. What are the most important issues holding up a deal?

    A. The NBA owners are seeking changes in both the financial split of league revenues dedicated to player compensation and the structure of the system. In the expiring collective bargaining agreement, players received 57 percent of basketball-related income. The owners - citing combined losses approaching $300 million last year, with 22 of 30 teams in the red - had offered a 50-50 split in their latest proposal. The owners also want to function under a "flex" salary cap that the players interpret as a hard cap similar to those in the NFL and NHL, as opposed to the current "soft" cap.

    Q. How far apart are the two sides?

    A. A chasm at the moment. Besides the dispute over cap structure, the players - whose latest offer was a 54.3 percent split to 45.7 for the teams - contend the owners' 10-year proposal would lose them about $7 billion over its term (allowing for projected growth in league revenues).

    By the way, both sides traditionally take their most recent offers off the table once a work stoppage commences, so the above numbers might not be the starting points the next time the parties talk.

    Q. When is the next negotiating session?

    A. TBD. When the two sides broke off talks in July 1998, they did not meet again until early August - and then for only 90 minutes, without progress. The owners and the players did not exactly sequester themselves heading toward the June 30 deadline this year, with just three meetings - totaling about 12 hours - in the final two weeks.

    Q. What does this mean for 2011-12?

    A. There are no dates chiseled in stone by which a deal must be struck for next season to escape unscathed. But if history is a guide, a lockout in 1995 lasted 74 days - into September - without changes in preseason or regular season schedules. In 1998, the NBA cancelled preseason games once the lockout reached Sept. 24. On Oct. 13, the first two weeks of the regular schedule were zapped.

    The league kept pushing about a month out in terms of cancellations, until NBA commissioner David Stern issued a Jan. 7 drop-dead date to stage even a 50-game game season. Free agency, training camps and two preseason games were crammed into a period of less than three weeks once the new agreement was ratified.

    This is depressing. Unlike the NFL lockout, where everyone is making money hand over fist, and some of the owners just want to make more money without actually trying(Jerry Richardson), I believe many of the NBA teams are really in trouble. The NBA has a lot more riding on getting a favorable deal out of this lockout.

    Now, I'm not sure how much a new CBA is going to help matters in this regard without addressing the underlying problems. Some teams are poorly run, and are extremely stupid with the limited amount of money they have. Some of these guys need to read Moneyball, and then have the central point - When you don't have a lot of money, you need to use every resource available to you to maximize the money you do spend - explained to them in depth. Really Minnesota, teams that went 15-67 don't spend $8,000,000 on guys like Luke Ridnour and Darko Milicic.

    I'm not sure it's in the best interests of the players to take a hardline stance on this matter because the players will always be at a disadvantage in a lockout scenario due to how poorly so many of the players look after their money. Absent the Maloofs, the owners don't have that problem. The Union probably should've conceded a version of a hard cap and started working at getting the floor for the cap set close to the ceiling, and working on exceptions to work around the cap.

    No matter how this turns out, it probably won't benefit whichever side triumphs in the negotiations enough to offset just how great an opportunity the league is casting aside. There is a chance to take the momentum from a great playoffs and to be the undisputed top story in the sports world for maybe an entire year, while the NFL screws around arguing over who gets this billion dollars or how to divide that billion dollars. There literally would be no other option in November once the World Series ends - the NBA would have to fill half of Sportscenter. And all the peripheral shows about the NFL would have to have there slots filled - and you can't have that many shows about the MLS.
