    They are losing money. It doesn't matter how popular you are if you are losing money.

    But it does matter how popular you are.

    The real questions you ask about a business in the red are why you are losing money and whether the problem is realistically fixable or reflects a fundamental flaw in the business.

    It's one thing if you have a good product with growing popularity, but loses money because, for example, (1) you have a ton of debt-service payments because you borrowed a ton of money on unfavorable terms, or (2) you leased most of your real properties back in 2006, at the height of the real estate boom when rent prices were at their highest. It's quite another to have less and less people wanting your product every year.

    In the former case, you try to refinance the loans or re-negotiate the leases, in the latter case you should just fold up shop.

    The league is no where close to the latter case. However, they do need to control their costs, including player costs. This is why we are where we are now.

    Here's a thought:

    One rational way for the parties to proceed is the following "50% Escrow Balling" arrangement:

    Beginning right now and until a deal is reached, everyone proceeds with next season (including free agency signings and everything else) under the exact terms of the old CBA with one exception. The exception being that each player only gets 50% of his salary payments, with the other 50% going into an escrow account. Neither the league nor the players can touch this escrow money until the final CBA deal is done. The split of that money will just be one more thing to settle as a part of the overall negotiations.

    Seems like this achieves the purposes of a lockout with none of the drawbacks. Specifically, a lockout puts pressure on both sides to make a deal because it causes both of them to lose money. Like a lockout, neither side is very happy for the duration of this "50% Escrow Balling" arrangement since the players are missing half of their paychecks (for the time being) and the owners also can't use that money to cover their losses (for the time being). On the drawback side, a lockout costs both sides revenues from fans, TV stations, etc. 50% Escrow Balling allows the sides to earn that revenue first and decide how to split the loot later.

    Which side do you think says "no" to this?

    As far as competing, why should any small team that isn't well managed be able to compete for free agents? Why would any player want to play for that franchise? Bigger markets have a natural advantage, just like markets that offer tax breaks, and there is nothing that you can do about that. If it's that unfair then don't have teams in those markets.

    As far as those small teams making money, revenue sharing will fix this. The owners just don't want to foot the bill for other teams that are struggling. They want the players to foot the bill.

    3-4% growth...and player contracts with 8-10% annual raises. That's a problem right there.

    It's a lot closer to crisis than people seem to appreciate. Not NHL-crisis, but a lot closer to that the NFL's "just take our word for it, we lose money" lies.

    When the bank/mortgage crisis sparked off the recession, there were about 8-12 teams that borrowed huge amounts from the NBA (friendly terms) to stay above water.

    The NBA has to find a way to give something back to the players...but the fact is, the players have to wake up and get real that the economic bubble burst and they've got to roll back.

    If the NBA does put in a hard cap, they'd be wise to enact a rule to protect the middle class.
    No two players on a team may constitute more than 40% of the hard cap.
    No three players may constitute more than 50% of the hard cap.

    It helps in multiple ways:
    There are only 12-20 (depending on your interpretation) "true franchise players" out there that deserve the max. This would help spread those guys out among the 30 teams more evenly and allow economic and financial parity.
    The biggest thing that kills NBA teams is giving near max money to big mistake guys. If you know handing out one mistake deal will screw your chances down the line from signing an All Star, you're going to be a lot more sensible with your money.
    By limiting how much of the cap each team can devote to mega contracts, you ensure that the other 13 aren't being stuck to min wage deals. You as a fan may not care, but rest assured the NBPA majority isn't voting in a deal that f's over almost 400 of the 440 members.

    i don't know if it's in crisis or not...but i think the lockout has the chance to be far more substantial in the NBA than it does in the NFL...because the NBA is in far worse shape than the NFL from the standpoint of teams losing money.

    I agree. Ultimately, the idea of having 30 teams in 28 markets be on equal footing isn't possible in reality.

    They'll never, ever, do this....but the best way to have a super-competitive league is to immediately relegate about 10 teams down to a minor league (toss up a few of the most successful D-league squads to fill it out to 12 or 16). Each year, relegate the worst 1-2 NBA teams and send up the best 1-2 minor leaguers.

    Minor league operates on a much smaller cap and overhead (relegated teams have to waive their top dollar players to get under....keeps stars in the NBA). So if you're Sacramento and can't afford to compete with LA, stay down there.

    You'll also put a sudden end to tanking. No one in their right mind would risk being sent down.

    Actually, you are making the wrong comparison. One individual player's salaries might grow 8-10%, but the league's salary as a whole does not grow at that rate because you got guys coming off contracts, other guys signing new ones, and the escrow arrangement, etc.

    In any case, given 4% growth in gross revenue, the current CBA would result in a annual player salary growth rate of betwen 4.35 and 4.53% during each of the next 10 years.

    Not really. The biggest impact salaries are the high end ones, and those are almost exclusively 4-5 years in length, and are often extended for another 3.

    he cap is constantly adjusted to follow true revenue growth, but since it has loopholes the size of C-5 Galaxies, it's useless to hold back salaries.

    That's why the league wants a new cap structure that has an ironclad ceiling to guarantee cost fixations.
