The Sacramento Kings agreed in principle to a deal with the Boston Celtics on Monday night, a league source told ESPN.com. The Celtics will send Sam Cassell and cash to the Kings for a future second-round pick.

Barring any changes overnight, the deal is expected to be finalized Tuesday afternoon with the league office.

The deal helps the Celtics by removing Cassell's salary from the team's luxury-tax computations. The Kings give up virtually nothing to do it as the pick is heavily protected. Furthermore, another league source says the deal could pave the way for the Celtics to add another player to their roster prior to the playoffs. The Celtics had a maximum of 15 players on their current roster.

Cassell hasn't played a game for the Celtics this season, but he's been an important veteran voice in the lockerroom. While it's unclear what the Kings will do with Cassell, most likely they'll waive him.

Looks like the Celtics are getting ready to get a couple of players. They cutting the roster down.

I'd hate for this to turn into one of those trade a player, and sign him back once he clears waivers kind of deals.

I presume he'll retire before ever wearing a Kings uniform. Am I wrong?

Bring Horry and Cassell back so they can retire as Rockets. Feel good story of the year!

That's not possible. Cassell would have to sit out 30 days before he can re-sign with the Celtics. In order to be eligible for the playoffs he has to be signed before March 1st.

Celtics either have a free agent they're going to sign or are making room for a 2 for 1 trade.

After the Kings waive him, I guess Sam will go back to the Celts in some capacity other than as a player. He won't have a front row seat during games but off the floor nothing will change. He will continue traveling with the team.

yeah he'll be waived and probably join as an assistant coach for the rest of the season with the celtics. he was serving in that capacity anyway, i believe.

this way he won't have to dress out for games, not sure that he was doing so before anyway.

I wonder if the Kings ARE actively shopping Udrih with a few players for an injured player. Maybe they need bodies on the court?
