From the tone of the report, it's highly likely that galveston will soon have gambling facilities. Considering the high percentage of gamblers from Texas in lake Charles, their business will be severely affected.

let's have some fun in our own backyard, baby!

    This would be sweet

It really got me to think all of the money going to Louisiana from Texas with all the cars with Texas license plates in the parking when I go there. The commercial they've been airing on the radio have been pretty damn clever.

That would be pretty cool if they could convert Galveston into some Atlantic City type area.

I hope it passes but I think we're to much of a bible-beatin state.

One thing is for sure... I'll be in Galveston every weekend.

Yeah. Let's have another Ike come thru and rip galveston to hell again

They should pick another location IMO.

Hell, they tear down casinos in Las Vegas all the time in favor of just rebuilding them all new. I would think a casino would be the least likely to be really effected by a major hurricane. They'd have it rebuilt again in a month or two.

The presence of casinos would do more for the rebuilding of Galveston after a hurricane than anything.

Just like Louisiana shut down New Orleans and picked another location for gambling after their big hurricane?

Galveston is the perfect spot, it's Fertita's power base AND home town. He's been chewing at the bit for years to get this rolling- it's a big reason why he's been gobbling up seaweall real estate for so long. As the article quotes, he's ready to go. Galveston also has a HUGE entryway in I-45 and an airport which could easily be expanded.

Most of the damage on the Island during Ike was beyond the seawall, in low lying areas of the island. The seawall is the highest point of the island in most cases. There are also new codes in force to prevent people building lower than they used to. Lastly, Fertita is a shrewd businessman. He will build structures that can handles some serious storms.

This is great news. If they legalize gambling and eventually mar1juana, goodbye state deficit, hello state surplus. I might actually get a raise in the next decade.

My Brother-in-law works directly for him. He's one of the controllers there. He said that Fertita wants to build up Galveston big time. He has the resources and enough investors to support him.

Galveston being reborn to 1900 levels would be *huge* for Houston, too.

    YES! Finally.

Looking forward to playing some poker closeby. Was disappointed when I moved to Houston to find no legit pokerrooms.

Hopefully the voters approve it. But I am skeptical since Texas is Republican and those psychos try to shove their "morals" into everybodys faces.

Galveston is a dump. Why not San Antonio?

tillman firtita is a dirty, brilliant b*stard...

I hate the way the guy does business, but it is effective

so if this comes to pass, how long before the rumors of the astrodome being converted to a casino start re-circulating?
