Well, except for the fact that it isn't "unlimited power," and that the system of checks and balances were required to allow the federal government to exercise the power. All three branches were involved, the SCOTUS specifically allowing for insurance regulation at the federal level, the Congress passing the law, then the Executive signing and implementing the legislation. All of this happened under the specific requirements of the Constitution.

Not if they smoke in a spot that doesn't affect others. They are engaging in something that endangers their personal welfare, but not that of others. They pay higher insurance premiums, they are allowed to smoke whatever tobacco products they want.

Again, being fat will cost your personal welfare, but will have limited effects on the general welfare of society. Insurance companies already give discounts to people who complete wellness programs, so again the people who engage in such behavior pay higher insurance prices, so pay for their own choices.

To some extent, they did this without actually setting the limits. They withheld highway funding from states that didn't comply, then when the states wanted that power back (particularly in states like Montana, with lots of open road), they negotiated to have the rules loosened. This is a perfect example of checks and balances between the state and federal levels of government.

I suspect that when the federal government gets involved with gerrymandering, it will be to reduce it, as they have under the VRA for decades. The states have gerrymandered to the nth degree, so this would appear to be another example of your projection.

You're of the opinion that standards for education should differ among the states? That's pretty silly.

This is another example of you believing liars over facts. The IRS targeted plenty of liberal groups for the same reasons they targeted conservative groups, it was about groups engaging in political commentary, not the ideological leanings of these groups. BTW, not a single conservative group was denied the status they were seeking, not even one.

Your commentary is devolving into nonsensical hypotheticals, more evidence of you parroting the pundits.

Eminent domain is part of the fifth amendment to the Constitution and the government (state, local and federal) has taken cars, homes and other property for various reasons from private citizens for centuries. You seem to be complaining about things that have been going on for a LONG time, why exactly are you blaming Obama for these things?

I don't want anyone to be dependent on the federal government, but I am THRILLED that, as a result of their action, I can't be denied health insurance for a preexisting condition, because I hit some arbitrary maximum, or because the insurer just doesn't feel like paying. It would appear that you're perfectly OK with insurers being given the power to decide my life and death issues, I prefer they are regulated so that my life and death issues are as much under my control as my insurer or employer.

Sure you can. You're free to purchase whatever plan you want, so long as it meets certain standards. It won't necessarily be tax-free and if it doesn't meet certain requirements, you may have to pay your penalty, but if your calculations show that such action makes sense, you are free to do either of these things.

Nobody has claimed the "noble causes" BS but you (again, parroting pundits, I suspect). You're free to purchase from a myriad of plans from a myriad of insurers. If you want a government subsidy, you need to have a gold, silver, or bronze plan which meets certain requirements, but if you don't need or want the subsidy, you're welcome to purchase whatever insurance you want.

You really should stop listening to pundits, they're making you believe a lot of things that just aren't true.

Except that, in the case of health insurance, public opinion polls consistently showed in all states that people were dissatisfied with the state of health insurance coverage. Unfortunately, the states continuously chose not to improve things, making federal action necessary. I don't believe the voters in the states wanted to keep the status quo with regards to health insurance, but the politicians on the insurance company payrolls sure did.

And the vast majority of states didn't have such requirements or mandates. People in those states could be denied for a variety of reasons, their claims could be denied for a variety of reasons, and MILLIONS of people were without insurance, either by choice (freeloaders) or because the insurance industry decided they couldn't be covered. Added to this, premiums were going up so rapidly for this crappy coverage that the healthcare industry was consuming nearly 1/6 of our entire national economy. Federal action was warranted and necessary, and has made a dramatic positive difference in the lives of millions of Americans.

Yes, it is. When egregious actions of an industry harm Americans, it is the place of government to force the industry to correct their behavior so that Americans aren't harmed by their actions.

And now, Texas and California and Idaho and all the other states don't need to write their own legislation to deal with this NATIONAL problem as it has been handled on the federal level. The states still have the opportunity to run their own exchanges, but they don't have the ability to continue to allow insurers to bilk Americans.

It isn't about red states and blue states. It is about insurers cheating their customers.

    Democracy?

I have freedom of self determination. I'm perfectly happy that the federal government does things like regulating insurers, restricting the ability of polluters to dirty our water and air, and enforce workplace safety standards. I'm sorry that you seem to want people to be able to do whatever they want, even if their actions negatively impact others, but negative externalities are a huge part of the reason that governments exist.

They had such power, relatively recently, and cost us two trillion dollars in war costs along with over a trillion dollars in tax cuts for wealthy people. Still, the power was FAR from "unlimited" but was still able to damage America FAR more than Obama has.

Again, it isn't about red team and blue team. It is about Americans' general welfare. You're not concerned about the general welfare of everyday Americans, you only appear to be concerned about the general welfare of conservatives.

Conservatives have also been helped by the ACA, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

As for the IRS, you really trust what they did was not politically motivated? LOL And it just so happens that all the emails disappeared? LOL Come on. The disappeared emails would have proved the corruption, just like the deleted Nixon tapes which led to his impending impeachment. So much for transparency when the IRS can delete the evidence.

And no, you are not free to buy cadillac insurance when the government slaps on a 40% excise tax. That's like saying you are free to smoke pot as long as you are willing to go to jail. A 40% excise tax means no one can afford a cadillac plan anymore. Even labor groups with rich benefits are upset about that. Please.

And the same thing goes if you want a high deductible plan. They will fine you so much that it can't be done anymore.

Really, you are hardly worth talking to as you don't know what you are talking about.

And as for people not being happy with health insurance, sure. But none of the changes made actually do anything for the biggest problem. It's so expensive. Guess what, cost continues to go up since ACA was passed. In fact, ACA has accelerated the increase and medical inflation not made it any better. In other words, EPIC fail if you want to grade on actually solving any problems with cost. The only thing it DOES accomplish is wealth redistribution. Most of the middle class will now pay more for insurance. Most people are net losers. The winners are the people who don't work or never stayed in school and never made a career. For those who made a bit more than the poverty level but did not qualify for Medicaid, those are the winners.

As for your other nonsense, about federal government stepping in to solve problems voters did not want "fixed", it's nonsense. ACA didn't fix the problem of cost, it was just an expansion of Medicaid, more socialism, more wealth redistribution. If you want to live in China or Cuba, go ahead. I prefer freedom. People need an incentive to work hard, not welfare and hand outs. There is a reason communism failed in the Soviet Union.

Given that they scrutinized as many liberal groups as conservative groups and that not a single one of those groups was denied the status they were seeking, it certainly doesn't appear that there is any smoke, much less any fire.

You're welcome to believe the conspiracy theorists if you like, I'll stick to the facts.

Sure you can. You are absolutely free to buy anything you want as long as you're willing to pay the cost for it.

Actually, it is more like saying you're free to smoke if you're willing to pay higher premiums for being a smoker and high tax rates on tobacco. Again, you are absolutely free to do so, if you are willing to pay the costs involved.

And the reduced instance of "cadillac" plans could very well cause those companies to improve their healthcare offerings to their other employees. I'm perfectly OK with pissing off labor groups, healthcare has to be paid for. The excise tax is one of the ways the ACA addresses costs.

This is an extremely silly statement. The penalty is minuscule, 1% of household income over $10,500. Even with my family's income, it is a total of $1200. If that, plus the cost of a high deductible plan, is less than the cost of insurance, it makes sense to have a high deductible plan. If not, it makes more sense to carry insurance. This isn't totalitarianism, it is a way to skew the risk/reward calculation so that more people have incentive to carry insurance which will actually cover them if they have a medical emergency.

No, I'm hardly worth you talking to as you don't have any logical, cogent answers to the points I have made. All you have are conservative talking points and the musings of pundits running through your head.

This would make sense if it wasn't so completely wrong.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...owing-really-slowly-americans-havent-noticed/

Healthcare cost inflation is at the lowest rates in decades, as a result of the ACA.

In before he claims the Washington Post is too liberal to be trusted

While I completely believe there are stronger cost-cutting measures that could be taken (allowing the government to negotiate drug and other medical prices, moving to a single payer system, etc.), you are completely wrong about the ACA's cost cutting. I'm sorry you find it difficult to accept the facts, but that doesn't make them any less factual.

    Link above, you're wrong.

Many more poor people than ever before now have insurance. That's a good thing. The other winners you left out of your list are the middle class, who have seen lower medical inflation over the last five years than in the two decades preceding, the people who now have insurance even though they had "preexisting conditions," the people who aren't tied to a job they don't want or need simply because of health insurance, and the millions whose insurance didn't actually cover anything, the ones who were being cheated.

Voters did want it fixed, that's is a HUGE part of the reason Obama was elected. Twice.

I wouldn't say the ACA "fixed" the problem, but it certainly reduced medical inflation pretty dramatically, decreased the number of uninsured to the lowest level since those numbers have been tracked, and gave people some assurance that they wouldn't be taken advantage of by their insurer.

LOL at your inability to make reasonable comparisons.

    You prefer Fox "News."

Of course, the ACA is hardly "welfare," or a "hand out." The central piece of that legislation requires that everyone in the country purchase insurance from private insurers. Other than the additional people on Medicare, that isn't a "hand out" at all.

The fact that you're equating the ACA with communism clearly shows the depth of your delusion.

    Try again, rookie.

Here is a quote from your wash po link:

Inflation was 1% due to the bad economic policies of Obama, and yet, health insurance premiums went up 4 times as much as inflation. How can you say that is fixing any problems with respect to cost? Obama promised cost would go down, it hasn't. It continues to increase. why? Because aca does not address cost at all. It just throws more money at medical insurance. It makes people LESS responsible for taking care of health issues since they just get more insurance to pay for everything.

You claimed insurance companies were making too much profits, Obama just handed them even more. Premiums went up four times the inflation rate, and you cheer like there was some kind of improvement. Lol. You are truly a clueless Obama fan boy.

LOL, medical inflation is at historic lows.

Ted Cruz: Democrats Are An 'Extreme, Radical Party'

WASHINGTON — In front of a highly supportive crowd at the Values Voter Summit, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) accused Democrats on Friday of being an “extreme, radical party” intent on taking away the rights of Americans.

“These are dangerous, radical times,” Cruz said at the conservative conference, where he received multiple standing ovations during a 30-minute speech that touched on everything from gun rights, Obamacare and abortion to the persecution of Christians around the globe.

I don't like the guy and he is a blowhard, but I think that he is a savvy politician and remarkable self-promoter. To say that he doesn't have a grasp on reality becomes he will say stuff which is hyperbolic, misleading, or outright wrong is missing the point. He has a astounding grasp on reality of our political landscape. He raised his star in an astoundingly short amount of time and he did not do it by bumbling around. He did it by being a realist in the realm of politics. He knows what he needs to say to touch the right spot with disaffected people on the far-right. And even if he doesn't believe what he is saying he still has the ability to say it convincingly.
