I vaguely remember this, because it was weird for me that NY gave up so much when Melo was going to sign there in the summer. I guess Melo puts money over chance at the chip

We are playing like poop, no ball movement but we are hanging around. And that's how you win in the road when you aren't playing well. We will make a serious run, count on it.

Melo said no to this because he wanted the extension. He guessed (correctly) that the new CBA would lessen his earning by quite a bit. So he threatened to go to Brooklyn if the Knicks won't trade for him. Yes, Melo screwed the Knicks and his own legacy for a few extra million. Granted, you can't fault a guy for wanting money. But at the same time, he made his own bed.

FWIW, if the Knicks had signed Melo in the offseason, used the amnesty clause on Amare, not messed around with Lin, they may have something like this with their rotation

    Chandler/Mozgov
    Melo/Gallinari
    Gallinari/Wilson Chandler
    Shumpert/JR
    Lin/Felton/Hardway JR

Injury prone lineup to be sure. But if relatively healthy this looks like the 3rd seed in the east.
