Rodon went 4.2 innings and allowed 8 unearned runs on 6 hits, walked 4, and struck out 8. He also hit 2 batters as NC State got pummeled 10-0 by Maryland. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Rodon leaves with the bases loaded & 2 outs in the 5th, down 4-0. Fastball Command was a real struggle for him.</p>— Mike Ferrin (@MikeFerrinSXM) <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeFerrinSXM/statuses/447165018615054336">March 22, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
If the score was 4-0 when he left the game how could he possibly have allowed 8 runs, earned or otherwise?
He gave up 5 himself (3 in the 5th) in 4.2 innings, left with the bases loaded in the 5th, and the reliever who came in after him allowed all 3 runners to score. Hence the 8 runs. Box score
He's looking at that tweet, which is wrong. It said it was 4-0 and he left with 3 on in 5th. That would only be 7 possible runs. Should have been 5-0 when he left.
I don't care what the era is and how many runs were unearned, he has had a very disappointing year, especially for someone viewed as a #1 pick. His command has been poor and his celosia has varied too much. I am not sure he is the #1 pick at this point.
Law's newest ranking (earlier this week) has Rodon #3 among draft prospects ( Aiken is 1 and Kolek is 2). In his weekly chat he wrote:" I haven't found anyone - area guy, cross-checker, director - who's arguing that Rodon is worthy of 1-1 this year, and I don't think the Astros are remotely "locked into" Rodon." I'd guess the #1 pick is wide open at this point. I hope a position player emerges.
It's still Rodon or bust! a HS SP pitcher has never gone first overall and it's too much of a risk for it.
A prep RHP has never been taken 1st overall in the draft. Kolek is 2nd on my board, but I just cant see us not taking Rodon with the 1st pick.

I was just listening to an old baseballamerica podcast (back in January) on Tanaka, and they talked about Rodon at the end. I honestly never knew Rodon's stock is this high. They had him comparable with Strausberg, Price, and Prior. As well as having him instantly becoming the 2nd best prospect in baseball as of right now. I know pitching prospects are always a dicey thing, but it's nice to actually have a #1 in a draft that truly features a big time #1.
Unfortunately, if you listen to them talk about him now, they're a lot more cautious. His stock has certainly dropped.... doesn't mean he won't be the #1 pick though.
I take any mid-season evaluations with a large grain of salt. I'll wait til they finish the season first. This might make Rodon more signable though. Maybe with a mediocre season he'll take at-slot money instead of above it.
