He should just wait until the last minute and sign the QO, even if that means it is December or January.

What did Dallas just pay Jordan again?

If the Rockets decided to pay a 33 years old, injury prone Paul $40mil a year, then you cannot blame the guy for wanting more than his actual value. Heck, even R. Anderson got more.

He is a young version of D. Jordan with upside potential.

One year 25 is much lesser than 5/ 85 any day of the week.

Rockets should make a new offer, but this time lower just for laughs.

    This.

Morey will find a 3-team trade where Capela is happy to go and we can also throw in Anderson and Gordon for our 3rd superstar. For example:

    Rockets:
    • Jimmy Butler ($18,691,627)
    • Miles Plumlee ($ 12,500,000)
    Timberwolves:
    • Eric Gordon ($13,500,375)
    • Dwayne Deadmon ($6,300,000)
    • 2019 Rockets First Round Pick
    • 2019 Hawks First Round Pick (via Cavaliers top-10 protected)
    Hawks (cap space $14,170,164):
    • Ryan Anderson ($20,421,546)
    • Clint Capela ($4,700,000 *qualifying offer*)
Rockets get their 3rd superstar in Butler. Meanwhile, Plumlee is salary we have to eat in this scenario, but we also need a serviceable center. I'm sure Morey would be able to move his more reasonable $12.5 million salary if need be. We finally get rid of Ryno!

Timberwolves get excellent value and replacement at shooting guard in Gordon, a decent role-player in Deadmon, plus 2 first round picks as compensation when they could be looking at losing Butler to free agency in 2019.

Hawks are never going to be big players in free agency even with all the cap space in the world so it might be a good idea to get a big man via trade to pair with up Trae Young. Also, the Anderson-for-Plumlee swap is not too bad for them so they don't just take on Ryno's dead contract.

The sacrifice though is a first round pick. Remember, Hawks have 3 first round picks in 2019: their own, Mavericks (top-5 protected), Cavaliers (top-10 protected). Two of those will most likely be lottery picks. So the Cavaliers' pick looks pretty expendable if that's all the Hawks are giving up plus absorbing about an extra $8 million in salary.

Again this is just a quick illustration of one possible way Capela can be moved. I'm sure Morey has a million of these scenarios already worked out.

How about $80MM over 4 years, with a 5th year club option (not a player option)? Surely Clint deserves to at least be paid as much as RyNo (even though Anderson is overpaid). I could get behind that deal.

I LOVED what Capela gave us during the playoffs especially the defense he provided when we faced the Utah Jazz.

But, you he has to understand that we loss two wing defenders so we're gonna need that money to grab some decent replacements cause there's not that many anymore.

We offered him 5 year deal / $85 Million and that's still not enough?! Without Chris Paul or James Harden being there, he wouldn't be able to create his own shot. Nor can he shoot from the 3PT line, in the middle, or make most of his free throws. Chris and James received those max contracts because they proved they're worth that much by how much they provide to the team.

If we didn't have Chris and James, Capela wouldn't have much production into making this team a competitor faced with the other teams in today's game. We'd either be knocked out the first round (If we survived the West without James and Chris) or not make the playoffs. That's how I'm seeing it and he should be glad that we're giving him that much money for what he can provide.

If he's able to do what Giannis Antetokounmpo, THEN GIVE HIM THAT DAMN MAX. But if he's only able to give us great defense without giving much offense, then he should be happy with getting 85 Million.

The QO expires on October 1st, unless the team extends it.

If the team doesn't extend it, which they rarely do, the player remains a Restricted Free Agent, and if he still doesn't sign an offer sheet, the team can extend the QO the following year to do it all over again. The only way he can become a UFA is by signing a new contract, whether QO or other, and finishing that new contract.

We've been through this before with DMo.

Can we do that? It seems like a nice compromise if possible.

I can see capela's point of view he outplayed both Adam's and towns, both making more bank. Towns about to get a raise, while capela is getting lowball by his team

We may not like this right now, but Capela seems to be a very determined person. It looks like when he wants something he really goes for it and stands his ground, he is no push over.

Remember when we drafted him? he was supposed to be the typical euro draft and stash player and IIRC we desperately tried to make him stay in Europe, we didnt want him here. He totally rejected the idea, stood his ground and fought to be in the NBA inmediately. Chances are that if we have gotten our way back then, he would probably still be there today.

Now it seems that he has a number in mind and it will be difficult to convince him otherwise. Lets hope we do manage to get a mutually beneficial agreement, he is definitely a very nice player.

Restricted Free Agents cannot become UFA's just by refusing to sign.

They have to finish a new contract to become a UFA. That new contract can be
    1. signing the 1yr QO (by Oct 1st),
    2. signing an offer sheet with a new team (minimum 2yrs, not including option years), which Rockets can match, or
    3. signing directly with the Rockets (for any length, including 1yr).
If none of those 3 things happen, and Rockets don't renounce their rights, he remains an RFA, and Rockets can extend a QO again next year to start the process all over again.

Keep in mind that Capela gains 7yr tenure with a 3yr contract. He might compromise by trying to get a shorter contract, to get his next contract sooner. That would also be "betting on himself." I think Morey asking for a discount for full 5yrs is us wanting our cake and eating it, too. Morey can go up on dollars or down on years, to me, both are compromises.

    1) Let him take the Qualifying offer.
    2) Sign Alex Len
    3) Make them split minutes. There won’t be much difference if any in production. If anything it’ll be Capela tanking his own value further cause he’ll pout.

Good luck seeing an $85M offer again next year.

Thanks for the concise answer. Players that sign a rfa contract doesn't seem to have much leverage. Dmo got renounce rfa status right? I don't see rockets doing that though.

Injury prone or not CP3 is a bonafide superstar, a top PG in the league, franchise player and game changer. He is PROVEN.

$85M is MORE than fair for a young guy coming off 1 good year and honestly it’s a lot of money to pay a guy that much based off of upside and potential (which I think is limited but thats besides the point). I can tell you he’s no AD, KAT, Embiid, Jokic etc. though.

Here’s DJ’s earning history. It took him 7 years to get $20+ Million a year.

JUL 3 2015 Signed a 4 year $87.6 million contract with Los Angeles (LAC)

DEC 12 2011 Signed a 4 year $43 million contract with Los Angeles (LAC)

JUL 14 2008 Signed a 3 year $2.14 million contract with Los Angeles (LAC)

2 things. I don’t think Clint is as good as the DJ that got 4 years $87.6M and I definitely think DJ was overpaid by at least $8 Million overall on that contract. An ideal amount would’ve been around $18m and $20m absolute tops.

Again $17M per year is more than fair for a guy coming off one good year where his strengths were highlighted with the help of Harden/CP3 and weaknesses were made less evident in D’Antoni’s system.

In a cap strapped FA market where other guys aren’t getting nearly what they think they’re worth. Aside from exceptions like Ariza. Using Ryno as an example or what the Suns gave Ariza to justify Capela deserving more is setting ourself up for failure. Long term failure. But this is just my opinion man.
