I also hope he improves but I just wonder how much longer Morey is going to be willing to wait. I thought this would be the year we would see a big jump in his development but he looked to be pretty much the same player the other night.
I think Daryl Morey values his production in the playoffs far more than a meaningless preseason game after an off-season of mass gain.
Check out DJ's career stats, again. He was playing with Paul starting 2011-2012. Why'd it take him 3yrs to make the big jump, after Paul arrived? He became a monster with much more stamina. His offensive game never really changed that much. It's the defense and rebounding that went to Elite levels, along with stamina to do it more than half the game like in previous years. Capela isn't close to being elite like that. Also note how few FGAs DJ gets vs Capela in MDA's system. It's not like Harden and MDA didn't maximize him, already. Well, yeah.......I mean, he didn't look great, but one pre-season game does not a season make. But someone better might be lurking on the horizon. You only trade him if you can truly upgrade in the frontcourt.
No. He will never be a star. And I don't consider DJ a star either. Nowadays it's hard in the first place to become a star Center. You must either be able to create , or shoot 3s and have an amazing post game. Otherwise you have to be a monster in rim protection. Gobert is a star. KAT is a star, Jokic is a star, Cousins is a star, Marc Gasol is a star, Embiid if healthy is a star, DJ nope, Drummond no, Whiteside no. Capela simply doesn't have the skillset needed and there's no way he will develop what it takes. Unless we have a real miracle.
I agree that he should be given some time to show the improvements he's made in his game. But if we get to the trade deadline and he's playing about the same I wonder if Morey would pull the trigger or if he waits because he might just be a year or two away. I would hate to trade him away too early only to watch him develop into a star for another team.
@heypartner Capela's stamina has to improve yes. but that comes with time. To me, the clippers system allows DJ's rebounding numbers to elevate a bit. he is surrounded by sub par rebounders who do not crash the glass. Capela has been surrounded by guys like harden, ariza, bev etc as a team that are known to crash the glass. As Capela's stamina and minutes go up, so will his rebounding numbers. he averaged 8 playing essentially playing half the game. hes not that far off.
Chicken or egg argument. What came first, a defense that leaves all the rebounds for DJ, or the league's #1 rebounder making it so the rest of the team can release on fast breaks. What came first, the Rockets guards crashing the boards on defense, or the coach telling them to because Capela gets pushed around.
id say a bit of both. nonetheless so long as capela reaches that 30mins mark he should be averaging no less than double digit boards this year to me
And that's my very point about comparisons to DJ,, both those numbers (30mpg and 10rpg) were not close to being achieved by DJ in his first two years with Paul. I'd rethink comparing Capela to DJ. Do we have 3yrs to wait for Capela's DJ-esque big jump at age 25, that might never come? Well, there is one small tidbit that you're leaving out in this. DJ and Capela are very similar players. Maybe, Paul's familiarity with DJ will help him acclimate and improve Capela's efficiency quicker than it took him when he was with DJ in LA. Paul is also at peak now and more experienced than he was back when he joined the Clippers. Not saying that will make a huge difference, but it's certainly a factor that shouldn't go unrecognized.
QFT... Obviously If Cousins or Davis is available, Clint is gone in a second. That said, Morey values his players very, very highly. Judging Clint after one preseason game is beyond stupid after his progress in the playoffs last year. He was beat up against the Thunder, and then went on to play fantastic against the Spurs, leading the entire playoffs in blocked shots and nearly rebounds too. Stop the knee jerking.
