Guys- I am taking my first trip to Canada next week for a Bachelor party. My question is should I take American Money out of the bank and exchange it there (we are going to the Casino's in Windsor) or am I best off just waiting until I get there and finding an ATM machine and just take money out like that? Does American bank cards even work in Canada. Thanks for any advice, I wasn't sure what the easiest thing to do would be.
Last week I had no problem using my atm card or a credit card to get cash. Check around for exchange rates. In Montreal I found one place that gave 40% ($1.40 canadian for $1.00 American). The hotel was giving 25%, most shops around 33%. Most places took American money as well and would tell you their exchange rate, convert the cost and give you any change in Canadian.
I used to be back and forth a lot, and I don't ever remember having a problem using US currency in Canada. Are you going to be in a fairly major city? That might make a difference.
Bobrek- Thanks for the advice! Be great to find $1.40-1, I am expecting about $1.25 so that would be a nice bonus! macBeth- Going to Windsor. Just over the border (North of Michigan), they have casinos there and also supposedly so decent strip clubs (I figure I'll be disappointed I'm use to Vegas)!
Ugh. You're going to Windsor? It's a hole. It's like coming to the US for the first time and staying in Buffalo. Shouldn't have any problem, though, with the currency, as Windsor is a huge pass through point for folks from the US. On a side note, there is this tunnel between the US and Canada, called the Welland tunnel, which runs underground and comes out near Windsor. It's two tracks, and one long tube, and it runs something like two miles. At one point, and for all I know this is still true, it was all the rage for young men of the area to test their machismo by " running the tunnel." This meant you had to make it in something like 10 minutes running on track, in pretty much pitch dark, AND hope that the trains ran on scedule, or else...well, you can imagine. A friend of a friend met his end in there, it was said. I hope you don't remember this story at the heights of alchoholic fervor when in Welland, and venture into the land of daring-do.
I go to Windsor quite a lot, the best thing to do is just withdraw money from a bank in Canada, you'll get better rates. However there are places to change your money just before you cross. Windsor is a small town, the strip clubs are nothing to write home about . They do take it all off and the girls aren't bad either. Have a good time.
MacBeth - Yeah I reallywaned to go back to Vegas. I was out there for anotehr Bachelor party last May and had a blast. I wanted to go but many of the guys would rather spend $20 in gas than $300 on plane tickets. Plus the best-man was up in Windsor for a Bachelor Party and he was pushing people that way. Zion- Thanks for the advice, sounds like my bank card is the way to go! Anyhow thank you all for the advice!
