Or did this debilitating loss cripple our post season hopes?

Hell, and here I was thinking James Harden was our franchise player, Omer Asik was our defensive anchor, Jeremy Lin drives our league leading pace, Parsons our glue guy, and Patterson... Patterson...

Oh, Patterson, that guy that got injured earlier in the season and the team actually went on a winning streak and started playing better without him. That guy. Even Chandler Parsons thinks he is "irrelevant".

Hey Carl, I got $200 to the tipjar right here to your $20 that says the Rockets will make the playoffs despite losing our key pillar Patrick Patterson. Here, I'll even do the math for you: that's 10:1 on your money.

Get out of your fetal position. Take your thumb out your mouth. Put up. And then, for God's sake, shut the **** up.

I love it! We will make the playoffs without Patterson. The sixth seed is just not a sure thing now... That's the only difference.

Well I'd hope you'd spot him odds on a frontrunner bet...

We will probably make the playoffs, but the debate is whether we are better off, or worse off, as a result of the trade. It is debatable and neither side will have definitive proof. In my opinion, we are worse off. And for a GM to make a trade that will hurt his team in the midst of a playoff push, in my opinion, is irresponsible and disrespectful to the current season ticket owners and fans who attend games and buy merchandise.

You can plan for the future for so long that the past catches up to you.

the real question is, would we end up as the 6th seed with ppat?

Nope. No way. Patrick Patterson is the difference between a contender and a lottery team. The man is simply irreplaceable.

PPat would have given us a 33+ game winning streak.

I think logic would tell us is that the mid-season change of 3 rotational players will nearly always make a team worse unless the replacement players are substantially superior to the outgoing players.

Lack of familiarity with coaching, team mates, offensive and defensive sets means they're basically in training camp when they walk in the door.

That PPat is a better PF than TRob at this point in their careers means you're taking a larger than normal hit in terms of team performance in comparison to them both being similar performance.

Now, if we had a clearly superior incoming player, that would offset the issue of familiarity, but TRob is no James Harden. He's not even Rudy Gay or Jose Calderon at this point.

That said, I think Morey made the right decision. We are not contenders as currently constructed, nor is it realistic to think we'll have a deep play off run with or without PPat.

Morey is thinking long term in terms of contention. If the price for that is the risk of a lower play off seed or missing the play offs, I think that's something that is not unreasonable, especially if in 1 or 2 years the team IS a legitimate play off contender.

Sucks as a fan that wants to watch the Rockets do well in the play off, but it does make sense if your goal is to improve the team long term (Morey's job).

Right now, this team has a hole at PF and a hole at backup PG (Beverley averaging 1 point per game on 10% shooting the past six games).

This team wasn't perfect before the trade, but it just got worse.

I would agree with you on mostly everything here. It is my opinion that Trob will never be a bonafide player in the league. That is debatable between reasonable people. Since I think that is the case, I would say that the trade does not achieve any of the things that Morey should want for the team - be it short-term or long-term success.

The other thing that frustrates me (due to my opinion of the talents involved in the trade) is that Morey is getting nothing but love from people around here for doing the trade, while our coaching staff and the team are getting railroaded by the same people yelling about what to do with a new team 60 games in to the season.

It's my opinion that Trob will never take a team far in to the playoffs, so why should we expect that his trade equivalent (PPat) would have to do the same?

I'm sorry but that has been true the entire season.

This trade didn't change that, PF was our weakest position before the trade and after it. Which says all you need to know about Patterson.

All the "We need a PF" threads are further proof of this. Since day one fans have been clamoring for even a decent PF like Millsap because Patterson is a good role player and a questionable starter.

Can't believe that Carl has people doubting the trade now. I guess his incessant posting (read: whining) about PPatt worked.

Look, the trade was a temporary set-back, but it was something that needed to happen! Give the team time, and more importantly give the coaching staff time to adjust. Let's be patient and take the long view people.

It is Morey's opinion that Trob could be a possible all-star. That's pretty much the only opinion that matters right now.

We can talk about if it was worth it at least a year from now. I don't get this rush to say it was a horrible trade and it shouldn't have been done.

Because people said the same thing about Lin and Asik that Morey overpaid and that they would not be worth it and Morey was right.

Morey said Harden would be a foundational player and people said "Nope, this is Joe Johnson all over again." and yet Morey was right.

I think Morey has earned the benefit of the doubt here, I mean at least until the end of the season. Because we were not getting past the first round with or without Patterson so this team's ceiling is just making the playoffs and that has always been the case.

The only way this trade comes out as bad is if Patterson instead turns into a all-star player.
