This. The "ShutDown Corner" concept is dead as long as the rules favor the offense. No need to make one the richest defender ever.
Hence, the idea of the rental. If he plays half as well he has before, we get superb depth at CB for the cost of a 1st round pick or a RB that the coaches refused to let play in a playoff game or a questionable QB many are doubting and the coaches don't seem to trust based off how they've called the plays for him. It is unlikely we'd get him for that much but if that was the asking price, I'd do it. Anything more would be insane given it is a rental for a CB.
I think - *think* - the Bucs could have enough cap space to give him that deal. No one could honestly hand him a deal like $15-16-17-18-19-20....but they have operated so far under the cap that they could give him a heavily front loaded deal where the bulk of his money is paid in years 1 and 2. That's how Mario is being paid and IIRC, that's what Revis' current deal looked like. With the NFL salary floor going way up, teams like the Bills and Bucs almost want to hand out a contract like that to be in compliance. They go from a $60M-ish payroll to $110M immediately, but the contract doesn't sting so badly after year 3. NFL guaranteed money distribution has been changing in recent years as well - signing bonuses on the decline in favor of guaranteed money in the first two years. Reduces cap hits down the line.
Rentals only work in Basketball and Baseball....IN SEASON. To give a first and players.........is just plain DUMB in Football for someone who is going to be there one season. THIS IS NOT MADDEN.....
He's seeking Mario Williams money but we let Mario Williams walk for that money so I doubt we trade anything for Revis. One year rental wouldn't be the worst thing, if it costs like a 4th round pick or something. If we have the cap space somewhere. Have him for one year and get compensation picks when he signs with someone else for $100mil.
