I'd just go with THIS boxed setup.

Cost efficient, and would would likely give you more than you'd expect at that price point. It's sold out online, but you could likely find it at your local store. I even saw one that had been opened on clearance at the Walmart in Crosby, I think they wanted $220.

It depends on size/layout of room, but also how much are you trying to spend, and how do you feel about the space eaten up by Tower speakers vs. the space given by flush mounted ceiling speakers.

Remember your Optical cables. You need them for 5.1 unless your reciever has HDMI in and outs.

If you want 5.1 the system linked is a good start. He can always invest in better speakers but the receiver Is a good foundation.

Currently I have a "tv nook" that I absolutely hate, but I have ceiling mounted speakers as my FL,FR,RL, and RR; then I have a center channel that sits on my tv stand beneath my TV and a sub that sits beneath it. There are ways to get better sound, but the wife doesn't want to give up space on Tower/stand alone speakers.
