So, the Middle Class in the nation's most populous state is no longer. I suspect this is happening in a number of other states as well and the long-term national trend is both sad and obvious.

In many ways, as California goes, so goes the country. It's interesting that the 95th percentile has fallen as much as it has. Seems a vibrant middle class that buys a lot of stuff is really good for people who are merely rich. The ultra-rich probably aren't that affected... thus the 99%.

Horribly run state, especially compared to Texas.

The very liberal California is a bad place to live and their middle class is shrinking however the polar bear analogy is bad. Polar bear populations are increasing. It find it too funny that so many people want the country be more liberal and socialistic when these crazy policies are quickly bankrupting California. Truly mind boggling.

Yep, horribly run state. How dare they let Enron fleece them for billions and billions. The nerve of them to offer millions of outrageous home loans. It's ridiculously bad government to allow CA to follow national trends in income earnings and distribution over the last 30 years.

The middle class would return with a vengeance if we are just patient
    with tinkle down economics.

Take the hit early on of going to school out of state in exchange for a cheaper life and a less competitive (professional) workforce. Before I naively came back down here to try and be a gas trader, I was paying $450 a month for a one-bedroom condo after taxes and everything.

why is California a bad place to live?

man I work for a non profit in CA and barely fall in that middle class category out here according to that broad number.

there is absolutely no place I would rather live right now- the quality of life, the geography and closeness to mountains, beaches, deserts, and the weather.

why on earth people don't like this place is truly mind boggling.

you guys must think this place stinks and it is being run into the ground or something. well, when I go outside, I see vibrant life happening, not some stagnant remnant of the good old days.

    it's really happening

CA is a great place to live. The middle class is shrinking in all states and it will be our downfall. We need a president who's single greatest focus is to rebuild the middle class.

Catering to the rich (republicans) nor catering to the poor (democrats) is going to do that. Cater to the middle.

It's a Texas thing to hate on CA. Most of them have never been there and seen the beauty of it. They are also incredibly jealous of the weather.

Not to derail the thread but it might behoove you to learn something before you speak about it.

    just yesterday

Global Warming Forces Polar Bear to Eat Their Own Kind

Hungry polar bears are now resorting to cannibalism as a result of global warming, according to a report published in the journal Arctic.

The gruesome behavior was initially observed by environmental photojournalist Jenny Ross in Olgastretet, a passage of water that divides Norway's Svalbard archipelago.

Ross captured the shocking images which depict an adult polar bear dragging the body of a cub that it had killed. At first, the photojournalist thought the corpse was that of a seal, only realizing at a closer look that it was a young bear, the BBC reported.

At the 2011 American Geophysical Union Meeting in San Francisco, Ross described three instances of killings and cannibalism of polar bear cubs by adult males, a behavioral response to food scarcity.

Ross blamed the rapid decline in Arctic sea ice during the summer months for the appearance of cannibalism. Polar bears primarily hunt seals for food.

"There are increasing numbers of observations of it occurring, particularly on land where polar bears are trapped ashore, completely food-deprived for extended periods of time due to the loss of sea ice as a result of climate change," Ross told the BBC.

No, we're just incredibly disappointed in a state that should be the beacon of progress in our nation but continually takes one step forward and two steps back.

We bash California because it deserves to be bashed, they're pissing it all away. Congrats.

They're all invading places like Austin and Boulder.

Wrecked their own state, but want the same yuppy lifestyle.

what yuppy lifestyle? maybe there are just yuppies in places of all kinds.

    when did California patent yuppyism?

    how is the state wrecked?

outside of what you all think is going on in California by the evil liberals, and everything you read about the economy, it's really just full of All American cities like any other All American city.

i do respect the opinion of "as california goes so does the country" and using it as a barometer of sorts, but there's no way I'm buying "we're disappointed in California" as a beacon of progress in this country.

if you don't like California so much, don't use it as a beacon of progress (you'll only end up pissing it away as we have). and if you don't like California and you have never even visited here or lived here, than you really should give it a shot once in your life.

it's not as bad as they make it out to be. it's even better.

Yes the liberals in California have wrecked the whole state. Meanwhile the GOP in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, and places like that have their states doing just fabulously. Everybody would love to live in those cultural centers of solid governing. They really are the finest examples of state run governments and a real example for everyone else.

Like all places California has its share of problems. Some of them are created by in state factors and some are created by national trends. But it isn't any different than any place else in this nation as far as that goes.
