Just go with the plan of drafting a TE to replace his ass. I don't CJ is going to last long.....just pay him to go away.

I'm hoping it's going to be a Stephen Anderson / TE draftee combo from here on out.

He probably didn't want to give up the money to retire so he worked a deal to get paid for another year. He probably will be released. In other words, they paid him to retire while lessening the cap hit if he had stuck around to collect his regular salary.

    https://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-rework-C-J-Fiedorowicz-retirement-12755424.php

The Texans have reworked the contract of tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz as he contemplates retirement following an injury-plagued season during which he suffered three concussions.

Fiedorowicz has reduced his base salary to $790,000 for this season and was advanced $229,000 in salary, according to NFL Players Association records.

There was also a renegotiated $1.971 million signing bonus.

The final two years of the contract are no longer listed on the deal. He had been due base salaries of $5.25 million and $5.5 million in 2019 and 2020.

A year ago, Fiedorowicz signed a three-year, $22 million contract that included $10 million guaranteed.

Originally due a $5 million base salary for this season, Fiedorowicz had a mechanism in his deal to reduce his salary by $2.8 million if the deal was terminated due to a pre-existing condition like concussions.

Fiedorowicz originally had a $5.165 million salary-cap figure. It's now been reduced to $1.676 million.

The salary for this year includes a $250,000 base salary de-escalator if Fiedorowicz fails to complete workouts.

Fiedorowicz has said he plans to attend the Texans' offseason conditioning program, but also is considering his options and could eventually retire due to a series of head injuries.

I wonder if this means they began talks with a FA tight end.

That could be a $229,000 severance package or incentive to retire.

    CJ Era is over.

I’ll miss his cool tattoos. Nothing like Jason Babin but cool bruh.

I think he had a hot wife so thanks for the eye candy.

He was growing into a pretty solid player before the concussions. Glad we know forsure now though. TE becomes a priority. Anderson is nothing more than a 3rd TE in this offense due to his size/blocking limitations and Griffin is a far cry from a #1 TE

I hope CJ is taken care of financially long term.......... but retiring was the right call. He has taken a lot of head trauma and it was all going to lead to some very uncomfortable problems down the road. Hopefully he is able to avoid some long term problems.

Hopefully they spend it wisely. I am still hoping they add Gaines.

Eifert is a high risk/high reward type of player.

Eifert would be better than anything they've already signed. All players we have signed are high risk/high reward.

Eifert another injury prone guy. Texans have enough injury prone TEs. No real great options out there (Graham was the guy & you can debate whether he's worth $10M/yr.)

Austin Seferian-Jenkins (25) – ASJ reportedly turned down two-year, $8 million offer from Jets.
Tyler Eifert (27) – Missed 40/64 games (63%) past 4 years. Should get incentive-based offers.
Eric Ebron - Released by Lions. 25yo struggled with injuries, consistency, blocking in Detroit.
Martellus Bennett (31) – - Went 55/701/7 for NE in '16. Has been cut by Packers & Patriots since.

Zach Miller (had to have his foot saved)
    Tyler Eifert
    Antonio Gates
    Neal Sterling
    Sean McGrath
    Levine Toilolo
    Ed Dickson
    John Phillips
    Logan Paulsen
    Ifeanyi Momah
    Richard Rodgers
    Luke Willson
    Austin Seferian-Jenkins
    Julius Thomas
    Brandon Williams
    Martellus Bennett
    Benjamin Watson
    Anthony Fasano
    Jeff Cumberland
    Troy Niklas
    Asante Cleveland
    Chris Gragg
    Clay Harbor
    Scott Simonson
    Mychal Rivera
