Clemens wants 22 mil in arby http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3333862 Great offseason. Thanks Mcfackinclane.
Wow....oh well...on to plan R....I honestly didnt think he was going to come back after we decided to win 70 games this year
He asked for it. I'm not sure there's anything dispositive about this, guys, kneejerks notwithstanding. Beltran asked for 10 years $200 million right off the bat. Bottom line: he plays for the Astros or he plays for no one. it's not like we're in a bidding war here.
How does this work now? We obviously throw an amount on the table and then an arbitrator decides what he deserves...correct? When does he have to decide whether or not he will sign a deal based on the arbitrators amount?
Big deal - he decides to throw that figure out there. That doesn't mean they end up at 22 mil in the end. Honestly, with the way he pitched last season and Clemens' durability, I'd say he's worth some serious cash. On top of that, if you look at the bottom line, the extra ticket sales and jersey sales Clemens has generated may justify spending some serious cash. I think that if the Astros and Clemens are both serious about trying to negotiate a contract for fair market value, they will settle before the arbitration hearing on a one year contract worth somewhere between 15-17 mil. One thing is for sure - Clemens won't lower the base value in favor of incentives again. I think he's earned the right to demand a high base after last season.
The way i look at it: 1) A portion of that amount is money due him from last year. 2) He brings the crowds. 3) He was the best pitcher in the NL last year. If anyone deserves it. He does. But since he doesn't have to travel with the team, I would give him 12-15 million this year.
take last year and this year and it is like paying him $13million a year.... Pay the guy...he deserves it!
we put up a number and he puts one up... if they can not agree to a number then an arbitrator chooses one or the other... there is not a middle ground. david delati said... they will not goto arbitration if he wants to play they will agree to something before it goes to that. the astros offered 13.5 mil
All they have to do is throw out a more reasonable number and the arbitrator will pick it. $22m is clearly outrageous, so I'd think anything from $12m to $15m would be reasonable for 05. Uncle Dray will pony up that much, I think.
he signed that deal last year. that was his call. he wanted concessions made, and the astros made them. he wanted to play below market value to play at home. great. done. end of contract. next. i agree with you...about $12-15 is where this will play out...could go as high as $17-18 though.
done..that gets it. and that's very, very fair. the arbitrator will push it up a bit...but not much. just my guess. i agree with Sam's point...there's a sticker shock effect when a player comes in and throws out a number like that which can work against him.
Does the arbitrator just pick one or the other....or does he have the authority to find a happy medium between the two?
Agreed. I would justify giving him the 22 million based on those reasons. The deal will get done. IMO.
