I hope so, it's just that i really always expect the worst out of them.

And btw they signed Portis to an offer sheet but he's a restricted free agent, if the Wizards match the Knicks would have around 35M in cap space again.

    It’s July 1.

That’s the only lede I’m confident reporting right now.

Imagine if free agency had begun at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Time. That’s the thought I keep coming back to, eternally grateful that the league moved the period up to 6 p.m. ET. We’re not even 12 hours into free agency, and it feels like we’ve lived years. The Mavericks must feel the same way.

Here’s what we know: Dallas had talked with Miami this week about trading for Kelly Olynyk and Derrick Jones Jr., because the Heat suspected it would acquire Jimmy Butler in free agency and needed to obtain cap space. Olynyk is an excellent role player, better than his facial hair would ever suggest. Jones, a bouncy 6’7 wing, would be another strong addition for a wing-deprived team. Around the league, teams knew that Dallas had cap space and would be willing to absorb “bad” contracts for teams looking to acquire stars. No stars sought out Dallas yet; the team won 33 games last season and hasn’t proven that the franchise can be a winner even with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. This was an acceptable alternative.

At some point, Miami became convinced that it was sending Goran Dragic to Dallas, league sources told me and The Athletic’s Jared Weiss. The two sides have been arguing over how the miscommunication happened and which side is to blame. Salary cap experts have said that including Olynyk and Jones would not have been a legal trade under the CBA. It’s possible that Courtney Lee, whose trade has been rumored for weeks, would have been involved. Lee could still be traded, or his expiring contract worth $12 million could be waived under the stretch provision to provide Dallas about $8 million more in salary cap space.

Miami agreed to sign-and-trade terms with Philadelphia involving Jimmy Butler, but that deal, as constructed Sunday night, is dead, multiple league sources say. The Heat remain determined to trade Dragic to clear the necessary space. Miami was reticent to give up Jones, even as a sweetener for the potential Dallas cap-clearing maneuver, league sources say. But for at least one moment on Sunday, Miami’s front office believed the Dallas portion of the deal was complete. It only became publicly apparent that Dallas, the essential third team, was not participating when it informed Jones’ agent that the deal was off.

With the Heat making acquiring Butler their key offseason objective and Philadelphia GM Elton Brand already FaceTiming Josh Richardson to welcome him to the team according to a league source, the Sixers and Heat remain committed to completing this deal with or without Dallas. Only the Knicks, Clippers and Lakers have the requisite cap space to take in Dragic’s salary and facilitate the complete deal as of early Monday morning.

Dallas has other planned targets, with one team source telling me there were “multiple deals hinging on other things.” The Miami trade was one of those deals. Another heavily speculated one is Danny Green, whose free agency decision reportedly awaits Kawhi Leonard. Green wants to make sure that the recent Finals MVP doesn’t wish to “run it back” with reigning champions in Toronto. Another likely target, Patrick Beverley, re-signed with the Los Angeles Clippers early Monday morning on a three-year, $40 million deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

But the Miami debacle interrupted everything, at least for one night. Dallas front office members were shocked when the expected deal fell through. The Mavericks’ Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson, who took restricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis to dinner Sunday night after agreeing to a five-year, $158 million deal, certainly were as well.

That’s important context: Dallas agreed to terms with Porzingis and Dwight Powell on Sunday evening. Porzingis was signed to an outright maximum deal with no conditions, while Powell opted into the final year of his deal – worth $10.3 million – and agreed to a three-year extension worth $33 million that will run through 2023. The team is also confident in retaining restricted free agents Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith, important role players to its plans moving forward.

Porzingis and Powell were the team’s 1A and 1B objectives this offseason. If nothing else, Dallas will debut next season a 7’3 center who protects the rim and spaces the floor at an elite level, a rare skillset that meshes perfectly with its 20-year-old budding superstar. The team still has all its cap space intact, and although a flurry of free agents signed Sunday night, there are still many targets. This is hardly the worst case scenario.

We knew days ago that the team’s top targets were headed elsewhere, including Kemba Walker, Khris Middleton, and others. Dallas didn’t waste its time attempting to garner meetings with players destined for other teams. Although the team was interested in Beverley, you cannot account for a player’s incumbent franchise re-signing him at a competitive price. Free agency is fickle, something Dallas has learned repeatedly over the past decade.

Dallas fans will be asking for more, which means that the coming days matter. Can the team rebound from what it felt was a salary cap coup? Mathematically, it has the ability to. The obvious question is how many attractive scenarios still exist on the market.

It was thought that the early June 30 start and Leonard’s slow decision would lengthen free agency. Now, the timeline has moved on an accelerated pace. We might understand how successful – or not – this summer was within 24 or 48 hours. Basketball writers everywhere are praying that they might be able to enjoy July 4 without breaking news complications for the first time in years. But how celebratory the Dallas fireworks prove to be will be determined in the coming few days.

Still no explanation as to how on Earth that mixup actually happens.

Dallas are clearly so pissed off that they have given insiders and writers the expectation that there is no way they will revive a deal, but when the dust settles and they wake up this morning with cooler heads, I can still see them taking Dragic. They're gonna have a lot of cap room left over. Honestly, that might be good for us. They're a contender to sign Rivers imo otherwise.

Only LA, LAC and Dallas have space now to consummate this trade.

Both LA teams are big game hunting and not using their space anytime soon.

This leaves only Dallas now lol.

I'm not going to cry over Jimmy Butler but I'm really loving every minute that Pat Riley has to sit there, hoping that some team will help him out and get this deal done. Hated him as a Lakers coach, hated him as a Knicks coach, hated him as a Heat coach, and continue to hate him as a Heat exec.

yeah it seems to not be getting as much attention as it probably should too. especially now that the list of suitable teams with cap space to absorb dragic to facilitate this deal as dwindled

If this doesn't happen maybe the Kawhi/Butler to L.A will gain some legs...is it better for us to have Kawhi with the Lakers or another contender in the West with him and Butler on the Clippers?

I haven't looked for any reports this morning had this been confirmed?

I imagine it's salvageable but now it will take the olynyk, DJ package but needs another salary to be legal and Dallas could probably demand that far off 1st if tbey alare desperate enough, which I feel they may be.

God if Morey could finagle his way to dumping CP3 for Whiteside and and any of the short term trash Miami has he'd become a God again.
