I wasn't born until after Bum was fired and coaching the saints, but I have tons of memories of him because of how connected he's stayed with Houston football and how beloved he is in this city. He's kind of like a grandpa for many Houston sports fans in my age group. RIP, Bum.
While I was reading about Bum Phillips passing away this song came up on my Pandora channel. It seems fitting. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/q97IfBOIR5Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I watched that entire thing last night, and for anyone that remembers Bum or wants to just listen to the old man talk, it's a great piece. When Carl Mauck starts crying while talking about Bum years after he left the game, it tells you a lot about how loved Bum was by his players.
I'll miss Bum. It's a cliché, but Coach was one of those people that broke the mold. I still miss the Oilers as well, damn it. Rest in peace, Coach.
I wasn't born until after Bum left the oilers, but I've read in previous years how important he was for the oilers. RIP +
