Wade and Bum seemed to have a very close relationship. It must be very tough for Wade and the entire Phillips family. I hope they get the appropriate family support during this tough time.

Luv Ya Blue were great times! Thanks Bum!

They should let Wade wear a cowboy hat on the sidelines Sunday, even if it has to be made by Nike.

I'll never forget watching Monday Night Football at the Astrodome...11/20/1978.

The greatest MNF game in history IMHO. And it was because of 2 people...

    Earl and Bum.

RIP Bum. You will be missed.

I am saddened for his passing. I remember his famous quote when the Oilers didn't make it to the Superbowl that year:

"Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on it. Next year we're going to kick the son of a b**** in."

I still carry a Luv Ya Blue hand towel in my guitar case for good luck. I also titled my album "Kick It In." I'm going to be wearing an Oiler shirt at my gig tonight.

Too bad. I don't think he was that great a coach, but obviously getting fired in his prime and finishing up with a pre-21st century Saints roster probably hamstrung his legacy. And, of course, having coached at every level in Texas he's certainly emblematic of state football.

How is that? The Oilers never won anything.

I'll Never forget him yelling on the sidelines watching White shoes return a punt for a td against the Lions in the Dome.

He was truly a great man!!!!

    Rest in peace Bum.

I agree. There has never been anything that approaches the Luv Ya Blue era in Houston sports history. If a person didn't live through it then I guess it would be hard to understand.

The Oilers didn't win a championship, but the team had everything to be a huge fan favorite. The coach looked and sounded like a true Texan. The star running back came from the University of Texas. The team had a cast of colorful supporting players that made them easy to root for.

Bum Phillips was a charismatic larger than life figure to many old Oiler fans, and it really is the end to an era.

    Sad to hear this :(

I can't imagine a more fitting tribute than the Texans defense going up to KC and absolutely demolishing the Chiefs for Wade.
