OKC will be an interesting long-term case. They were gifted two MVP-worthy players when the team arrived and have never been anything other than a contender. Of course they're selling out.

The Thunder's long-term viability is a more interesting question. What if they don't win the championship this season, causing Durant to leave for DC and Westbrook to leave for Los Angeles in two years? Will people still attend the games? Oklahoma City is the third-smallest television market in the league. What'll happen to ratings during the inevitable lean years?

As of now, Oklahoma City is an exception to the rule.

This post shows your lack of knowledge on Texas. It's like your posting the first thought that comes into your mind and you're doing it inside a forum based in Houston. The comparison is very off.

Texas is over five times the size of Greece, keep that in mind when you're saying the analogy is similar to the other. The population of Houston is nearly 2.2 million, the population of Milwaukee is under 600,000, The population of Seattle in around 660,000 and the population of Vancouver is just over 600,000.

In the early 2000s Les was entertaining the idea of moving the team to Louisville, something that many posters forget or ignore when they call Les a good owner. You don't move a team from Houston to Louisville, just like you don't move a team from BASKETBALL CRAZED Seattle to East Dallas, Oklahoma. One of these things happened, one almost did. Teams move it's a greedy bunch of owners in the NBA. I think Seattle probably deserves a team more than Wisconsin based on the fact that a league without a Seattle team is ridiculous, but that's another discussion for another day.

Almost nobody in Wisconsin liked basketball when I lived up there. The Bucks have some nerve considering this fact..

thanx for the lesson. I mean really interesting post.
However it was only a tongue in cheek example.
The Bucks are 40+ years in the city and noone deserves their team taken away from them
Besides the arena will be approved.
The voting is tomorrow and all the locals have been moved and taking action. They are not indiffirent.

If anyone interested the deal is about to get passed today and tomorrow. They have the votes and are beyond optimistic.
So no move to Vegas or Seattle, hopefully.

It's not going to fail. They conceded the ticket charge and some other details to the Democrats.
At least it's highly unlikely but I'm still kinda anxious. 11am tomorrow it's the vote. Just need three democrats to vote on it and two of them have already said today publicly they will.
I hoep it's over soon so we aren't the joke of the league.

"Today's vote is a significant step forward in our collective effort to build a new sports and entertainment district in Wisconsin. We appreciate the bipartisan leadership in Madison for bringing this transformative partnership one step closer to reality. We're optimistic that this financing package will receive support in the Assembly and look forward to working with state, county and city officials."

    - President Peter Feigin

:)))) 21-10! Amazing. The local fans did a wonderful job calling all day and night the senators going to radio shows having rallies everything.

Now needs to pass Assembly and County but it will be easy since it's bipartisan.

Great critique. What about the history of publicly-financed stadiums do you find defensible? Try to avoid emotional arguments about pride and, instead, focus on the finances of it.

My attitude toward public financing changed a lot as I read the work of David Cay Johnston. Anyway, Oliver didn't hold back. There are much better things to use public funds for.

Millions in lost taxes that will get even more in the next two scheduled cap rises, 100 million debt keeping the previous arena that will have NO tendant, leaving the University of Marquette without a place to play, creating constuction jobs, renovating the Park East dumbster that has toxic underground and noone wants to develop for 20 years and is in th middle of downtown, tourism , international exposure for a state that noone knows or cares about outside of the midwest.
    Is that enough for you?

    Oh yeah

Yeah, Field of Schemes is what opened my eyes to this giant scam. It is an "investment" that is almost never returned back to the actual investors.

What's scary is the precedent being set by the Atlanta Braves. Turner Field is barely 20 years old and they've already secured a new, secretly-negotiated, publicly-financed stadium in the suburbs. If the shelf life for these things is 20 years, Houston better get ready for more relocation threats and Milwaukee can already start to look for more potential "entertainment districts" to "invest" in.

    half knowledge <<< ignorance.

What bluff? The contract terms were not made public by either the owners or the NBA ,so they could buy it back from the NBA and move it to Las Vegas. Easy to talk about "calling bluff" when you don't know crap.

and LOL at that website. Buy book? Yeah that's a FULLY impartial local site to get your info from. NOT BIASED AT ALL.

How is $100 million in debt worse than $250 million+? Because some guys get to play basketball in a state that only cares about the Packers and the Badgers? You got fleeced by billionaire owners and a league who could've paid for this arena many times over.

Construction jobs will not justify this public expense in the same that seasonal concession stand jobs inside the stadium don't. If the team weren't getting 100% of the revenue, then you'd have more ground to stand on. As it stands, you allowed your emotions surrounding the team to cloud your judgment.

Marquette is a private university. Let them pay for their own basketball facilities, especially when the state government is cutting $250 million from their own state university system.

It's indefensible to give this money away.
