The best coach for the Rockets is the coach that can "get through" to James Harden to make him the best player he can be (which includes defense and leadership). And that in turn will reflect well on the rest of the Rockets players.

Thibs appears to perhaps be someone that could do just that. Someone that could engage Harden the way Harden was engaged for the USA FIBA team.

Normally I hate the thought of Rockets players playing on Olympic teams for fear of injury, but Harden needs those reps this summer. Lets hope he makes the final 12 man roster.

BTW, to beat the Warriors, you can't match up with them in their style. You have to zig while they zag. That means muddy it up. Get tough and physical. Just look at those Cavs wins in the Finals. The Grizzlies wins. That is the secret. Thibs seems like the right ringleader for this.

until a team can consistently punish the GSW down low with their best lineup of DG at the 5, nobody is beating this team 4 times in a series. And with the lack of play at the 5 these days, it doesn't look too good.

    1) He was not successful. That kind of success even Milkhair achieved. Overachieving by doing nothing but yelling at his players to run more and jump higher than the opponent. We've surpassed that point, that's why this season is such a flop. We're going for rings. I want a coach who can allow star players to rest a lot of the time and whose team doesn't always look like they are out of breath. The Spurs and Warriors should be emulated, and then we innovate from there onwards. We don't go back in time.

    2) You're arguing against yourself. Kerr knows how to choose systems, and assistants. A monkey can run it after that. If Thibs were out his team would sink. If his star player is out, his team would tank. Please, stop questioning Kerr he's the most succesful rookie coach in the history of the game and took a team with no more talent than 2-3 of his other peers to a historic season and that's continuing today.

    3) No one said that about those coaches. Please provide evidence. Pat Riley is the god father of Thibs' defense and he also had displayed the ability to run a high-octane seemless offense. It's not comparable.

Popovich is an ultra disciplined guy but he knows when to turn it up, and most of the time it's not turned up to overdrive.

Carlisle similarly has run great defenses and excellent offenses. HE HAS A RING.

Jerry Sloan? Come on. Zero rings while coaching two of the greatest players ever. It's fitting that a team with a coach able to reach players' hearts and minds (Rudy) outdid him. Rudy motivated everyone, he understood how a player's mind works more than a simplistic "everyone wants to win".

    4) Players want to win, but not all coaches are able to get ALL TYPES of players to make the changes necessary to win. It doesn't take a genius to motivate Kevin Durant or Lebron James. It takes a genius to motivate the Terrence Jones' and James Harden and Dwight Howard at the same time. Different players, different generation, different psychology of motivation. That's why Phil could win, because he could mentally tap into ANY player, not just the ones who were already willing to work.

Good to know about the stats, that's a big positive for his chances of coaching this team. Frankly, if he came out and said his unsuccessful offensive philosophy requires someone independent and unbiased (the GM) to seek out an offensive assistant who he is willing to rely on heavily, I would be over the moon and clamouring to hire him. The truth is, he's never shown himself to be that guy.

Absolutely. That's part of it. That's why the Grizzlies caused them some issues with ZBo and Gasol. The problem is the Grizz don't have any shooting and a poor bench.

I think Kerr is a good coach, but he was very fortunate to have a team handed to him with versatile players that were drafted when GS was a lottery team. Mark Jackson definitely helped get that team going in the right direction. I think people underestimate how well GS drafted and how well those players fit together. I think they did better than OKC overall.

As far as Thibs, I'm not as high on him as most people are.
