The two theories the most plausible to me are:

    1) Loading up on assets for some sort of trade between now and final roster cuts in late October.

    2) Creating competition for the final roster spots. Giving the players a chance to prove who deserves to stay.

    uhh...durp?
Thats a no brainer. Brooks is a proven player and Canaan was going to play in the D-league anyways and now his stay there is almost guaranteed having not played in the summer league.
Why would the team sign a guy that has played for them well in the past if he is not going to be on the team by Nov 1st? Thats common sense.

    Yea I think so too.

Young, Jordon and covington can be cut easy, then they could cut Williams/brooks if something nice in FA comes up.

Cambys 40, and is very injury prone. He couldn't give you 60+ games as a backup even if you begged him, he'l probably only see the floor in cases of injury and enjoy his freetime in his home.

    Lin/Beverley
    Harden/
    Parsons/Garcia
    Jones/Motiejunas/Smith
    Howard/Asik

Thats the set 10 man rotation for me, then you can throw in 2 of Williams/Caspi/Camby/Brooks/Canaan.

    U guys thought about the rosters too much;
It's too early to worry about this
There r too many possibilities to change until season opening
U don't know what it will happen tomorrow
maybe we bring LMA to Houston; maybe we trade for Rondo; maybe we don't do anything.
but Morey will not stop signing somebody if the guys has efficient value to the team and we can get them at vet price

If we look at Ersan vs LMA a few interesting things emerge. LMA is a superstar and gives us our Big 3, but at what cost? Likely Lin, Asik, young PF(s) and picks. While Ersan, may be a better fit as far as how this team is structured as a true stretch 4 who can assimilate into the offense, versus changing it. His improvement last year and 3pt shooting, would give us a 26 year old PF on the upswing. Plus, as has been suggested in this thread we could obtain him for something like Lin and maybe DMo. Here's Ersan's ESPN insider stats and scouting report.

    SEASON FG% FT% P/40 R/40 A/40 TS% AST TO USG REB PER
    '06-'07 .383 .787 16.5 7.8 2.0 50.0 9.8 10.2 19.2 11.4 12.10

    Scouting report
+ Pick-and-pop big man who can play physical and rebound. Will force shots.
+ Limited leaping ability. Doesn't block shots and a below-average finisher.
+ Can defend post but struggles to guard perimeter. Good foul shooter.

    Analysis
Fluke season or harbinger of what's to come? Ilyasova played dramatically better than anybody expected, taking over as a starter a third of the way through the season and posting some eye-popping box scores before cooling off toward the end.

Ilyasova's shooting stats certainly jump out -- he made 45.5 percent of his 3s and 39.7 percent of his long 2s -- but even more was all the chances he got himself at the basket. For a jump shooter, taking more than four field goal attempts a game at the rim is impressive. He pulled it off thanks to his offensive rebounding, off-ball movement and occasional show-and-go move. He also drew fouls at a strong clip for a jump shooter; between that and the 3s he had a good secondary percentage and ranked sixth at his position in true shooting percentage. All this came with a low cost in turnovers, although he still forces his jumper from time to time.

Ilyasova also blew up on the glass, including a 26-rebound game against New Jersey, and finished eighth at his position in rebound rate. The only weak point in his performance was at the defensive end, where he can still be a bit heavy-footed and seemed to slack off last season. Opposing power forwards feasted to an 18.2 PER against him according to 82games.com, and the Bucks gave up 4.9 points per 100 possessions more with him on the court.

He won't shoot 45.5 percent on 3s again -- he was in the low 30s each of his three previous seasons -- but actually the rest of Ilyasova's season looks fairly sustainable, and he's only 25. The biggest concern isn't whether he can sustain most of his statistical improvement from last season, but whether he can bring a bit more defense along with it.

In contrast, LMA is not the 3pt threat stretch 4 that would seem to fit best in this offense. However, his mid-range game reminds me of Duncan (not Nowitzki as suggested below). He's an elite low post scorer, who can step out to 17-18 ft and still be effective. LMA's length, defensive ability and overall efficiency would make him an impressive acquisition, but much like Bosh has taken a lesser role in MIA, I would see LMA doing the same here. To obtain, LMA it seems at a minimum Asik, Lin, young PFs, and several 1st round picks will have to go. The real question for me is do we need to go this route (if Morey can pull it off) and give up tremendous depth or add a more complimentary player and bet on the development of Parsons as potentially a star?

    '12-'13 (Projected) .501 .797 22.3 8.7 2.6 54.3 9.8 8.6 22.8 12.8 21.13

    Scouting report
+ Elite low-post scorer with unblockable turnaround and good midrange game.
+ Excels at spinning out of the post for an alley-oop. Runs floor well. Shies from contact.
+ Length, mobility make him an effective defender. Has size to guard 5s.

    Analysis
Aldridge has achieved full-fledged stardom as something of a poor man's Dirk Nowitzki, a jump-shooting big man who can generate lots of high-percentage shots with few turnovers. He doesn't do it as well as Nowitzki, obviously, which is why Aldridge doesn't have an MVP or a championship ring, but he is darned effective. Aldridge averaged 23.9 points per 40 minutes last season, third best among power forwards, while ranking in the top 15 at his position in true shooting percentage and turnover ratio. That's some serious efficiency.

Aldridge shot 42.2 percent on jumpers outside 10 feet and went to that weapon a lot, taking nearly 10 a game; only three players, including Nowitzki, attempted more on the season. In addition, Aldridge shot a sizzling 52.1 percent from 3 to 9 feet, the second-best mark in the league -- an area where the league average is just 37.5 percent -- and made 68.4 percent in the basket area.

Meanwhile, Aldridge is a vastly underrated defensive player. He doesn't put up huge block or steal totals, but his length and mobility make him a good pick-and-roll and low-post defender. He has also developed a very good strip move against opposing post players. Synergy rated him among the league's top power forwards last season, and the Blazers gave up 7.8 fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the court. The only quibble is that he could be a more effective defensive rebounder given his size. He is only average for a power forward and well below average for a center.

you just keep acquiring shooters. it's a shooting orgy, yo. For two reasons, one, like old man stated, injury risk emergency. the second one being, since we don't have an all star four and none of the fours in our roster have emerged, we will see A LOT of that line up in game 2 of OKC. Before lin hurt his boob, it was working nicely. Having a lot of shooters helps when one is struggling. would have liked mike miller as well, but what can you do?

Guys - you forget that we're the rockets. Inevitably, 11 people will be injured at some point.

With all due respect, you don't realize what a top 10 NBA center (with upside) on a friendly contract is worth.

You won't get much argument from me here. I have been singing Ilyasova's praises for almost 2 years now. I would also add his weaknesses with the Bucks would mostly be hidden with Howard on the court. So I think Ilyasova would be a great fit. But LMA is just another level so while he might not be as good a fit in the sense we need another three point shooter do not get it twisted in thinking he anywhere near the player LMA is. They are on different levels. So you go far LMA if you can get him. And you do not worry too much about the cost of second and third tier players to get him. Morey get's players like Bev and Lin and TJones every year

Does that make the man a horse's assistant or a horse's asset?

Morey is preparing for the possibility that an opportunity comes up to trade Lin + Asik + picks for a 3rd star. Smart. Let them battle it out in camp, will make our players stronger.

Yes that is a real possibility. And we could go a few months without a trade. Morey is definitely an asset collector and Brooks and Camby certainly do prepare us for if and when Morey does trade Lin and Asik. I even get Camby because I wanted him as soon as he was traded to Toronto. Wondering how we could get him. And now Toronto buys him out and he may fall in our lap because Houston is his adopted home. That all makessense, he is old wants to retire. We have no money and if we do find a deal for Asik we need some backup center help.

Camby makes sense but I got to wonder why Brooks wuld sign here knowing the roster is deep. If Brooks isn't lying then he had other offers. Why would he turn those down and come here where he got almost no minutes. At least the other spots are unknowns but here McHale had no desire to play him even when out of desperation he had to.

Maybe he loves Houston that much. He said as much in his interview but he also said this came out of the blue. Unexpected. Why unexpected? If Morey wanted Brooks why not go after as soon as he was available. Why wait and then pull the trigger quick. He could have a legitimate reason why but it also could be because something changed. I deal that wasn't became.

I know I could just be reaching but Brooks' situation is the opposite of Camby's he is still relatively young. He just needs to play on a team that an give him a few minutes so he can show case his talents and earn a bigger contract. Why does he think that can happen here. Or does he? I don't pretend to know but maybe he knows he'll at least get a shot at it. He said something like that.

NO to Drew "Not-So" Gooden. This dude screams bad. He cant shoot, Patrick Patterson can out-rebound him ( ya I said it ) He cant play defense. Hes slow. Hes 31. He sucks. Hair patch.
