Even if they get there in 2 minutes a lot of kids would have died.

Some time before 9:30 a.m. (1430 UTC) on December 14, 2012, Adam Peter Lanza fatally shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, aged 52, in her face and head at their Newtown home.[11] Investigators later found her body in her bed, wearing pajamas, with four gunshots to her head.[17] Lanza then drove his mother's black Honda Civic to the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

At about 9:35 a.m., using his mother's Bushmaster XM-15 rifle, Lanza shot his way in through a locked glass door at the front of the school.[18][19] He was wearing black military-style gear, including a bulletproof vest and mask.[20][21] Some of those present reported that initial shots were heard on the school intercom system, which was being used for morning announcements.[22]
Principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach were in a meeting with other faculty members when they heard gunshots outside. Hochsprung and Sherlach immediately left the room and rushed to the source of the sounds and encountered Lanza, who shot both women dead as they confronted him.[23] Hochsprung may have turned on the school intercom to alert others in the building. A 9-year-old boy in a fourth grade class in the gymnasium also reported hearing the shooter say "Put your hands up!" over the intercom system and someone else saying "Don't shoot!" The child said he also heard people yelling and many gunshots over the intercom as he, his classmates, and teacher took refuge in a closet in the gymnasium.[24] Diane Day, a school therapist who was at the faculty meeting as well, reported hearing screaming, followed by more gunshots. Natalie Hammond, lead teacher in the meeting room, pressed her body against the door to keep it closed. Lanza shot Hammond through the door in the leg and arm, for which she was later treated at Danbury Hospital.[23][25]

Classroom slayings
Teacher Victoria Soto attempted to hide several children in a closet and cupboards.[26][27] As Lanza entered her classroom, Soto told him that the children were in the auditorium. Several of the children, among them 6-year-old Jesse Lewis, then came out of their hiding place and tried to run for safety and were shot dead. Soto put herself between her students and the shooter, who then fatally shot her.[27] Six surviving children from Soto's class crawled out of the cupboards after the shooting and fled the school. They and a school bus driver took refuge at the nearby home of Gene Rosen, a retired psychologist.[28]
Anne Marie Murphy, a teacher's aide who worked with special needs students, shielded 6-year-old Dylan Hockley with her body, trying to protect him from the bullets that killed them both.[29][30] Paraprofessional Rachel D'Avino, who had been employed at the school working with a special needs student for a little more than one week, also died trying to protect her students.[31]
In a nearby first grade classroom, Lauren Rousseau, a substitute teacher since October, was shot in the face and killed. All but one of the children in her classroom were also shot dead. A 6-year-old girl was the sole survivor. Her family pastor told media that the child survived the mass shooting by playing dead and remaining still until the building grew quiet and she felt it was safe to leave. She ran from the school, covered in blood, and was the first child to escape the building. When she reached her mother, she said, "Mommy, I'm OK, but all my friends are dead." The child described the shooter as a very angry man.[32]
According to his parents, a 6-year-old boy in one of the classes gathered a group of his classmates and the children all escaped out the door when the gunman shot their teacher. Lanza remained silent when he entered their classroom and fired the weapon.[33]

Elsewhere in the building
School nurse Sarah Cox, 60, hid under a desk in her office and described seeing Lanza enter her office and stand 20 feet away before turning around and leaving. She and school secretary Barbara Halstead then hid in a first-aid supply closet for up to four hours, after calling 9-1-1.[34] A custodian ran through hallways, alerting classrooms.[35]
First grade teacher Kaitlin Roig, age 29, hid 14 students in a bathroom and barricaded the door, telling them to be completely quiet to remain safe.[36][37] School librarian Yvonne Cech and Maryann Jacob, the library clerk for the school, first hid 18 children in a part of the library the school used for lockdown in practice drills, but on discovering that one of the doors would not lock, had the children crawl into a storage room as she barricaded the door with a filing cabinet.[5][38][39]
Music teacher Maryrose Kristopik, 50, barricaded her fourth-graders in a tiny supply closet during the rampage.[40] Lanza arrived moments later, pounding and yelling "Let me in," while the students in Maryrose Kristopik's class quietly hid inside, AFP reported.[41]
Two third graders, chosen as classroom helpers, were walking down the hallway to the office to deliver the morning attendance sheet during the shooting. Teacher Abbey Clements pulled both children into her classroom, where they hid, saving their lives.[42]
Laura Feinstein, a reading specialist at the school, gathered two students from outside her classroom and hid with them under desks after they heard gunshots.[43] Feinstein called the school office and attempted to call 9-1-1 but was unable to connect because her cell phone did not have reception. She hid with the children for approximately 40 minutes, before law enforcement finally came to lead them out of the room.[44]
Lanza stopped shooting between 9:46 a.m. and 9:53 a.m., after firing approximately 50 to 100 rounds.[45] He shot all of his victims multiple times, and at least one victim, 6-year-old Noah Pozner, 11 times.[46][47] He shot mostly in two first-grade classrooms, killing fourteen in one room and six in the other. The student victims were eight boys and twelve girls, between six and seven years of age,[48] and the six adults were all women who worked at the school. Lanza shot himself in the head as first responders arrived.[49][50][51][52]

And those kids who were killed because they didnt stay hidden....must be extra tough for a parent to find that out. They almost made it..

You mean the aides? I think i read one was in a classroom with one of the teachers killed...not sure about the other.

Pretty detailed account of what happened. Oh, I am sure that the teacher on maternity leave is crushed. I also read that Emilie Parker's family (the one with the dad speaking to media) moved to CT only 8 months ago from Utah for his new job.

Holy crap, I just figured out today in reading these accounts, and confirming on facebook, that I am acquainted with one of the surviving teachers.

We just know each other digitally, since we have friends in common and do the same 20-person NCAA tournament pool every year. She is very, very cool and funny in that venue. And her basketball picks usually are not stellar.

Amazingly cool that she got those two student assistants out of the hallway and kept her class more or less calm. I'm just amazed by her right now. I have no idea how I would react with a freak carrying a Bushmaster around the hallways.

I think we need some form of new rule when it comes to custody of a child.. What makes mom get custody of the child in this lunatic's case??? Did they split kids or something/ one went to the other?? We know nothing about the father up to this point.

Parents divorce was amicable and the father was taking care of them financially. Left them the house and the kids split time between them, but their permanent residence was with their mom. Doesn't sound like their was a dispute for custody. Keep in mind that this "lunatic" was just an odd child before all this happened. Plenty of those around. There was really no reason for him not to be with his mom, especially when she stayed at home with him.

What a small world. I am wondering how the teachers from that school are coping. I have a friend who has a cousin that knew one of the aides.

Of course nothing out of the ordinary, just mom and son living on dad's savings while mom takes son to shooting range on a Sunday afternoon hanging out just the two of them...

What i meant was, at the time of the divorce, there was no reason to keep him from staying with his mother. No reason for the dad to step in or the court system, since the mother didn't take up shooting until after the split. Obviously she was wrong to let her son use guns, but perhaps no one outside of the mother knew the extent of his gun knowldege/use and mental health, so no one stepped in.

Any reports of how he got his hands on the guns? I haven't seen anything specific on that. Did the mom keep them locked up overnight, or did they both have complete access to them?

Possible motive?

Nancy Lanza, the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter, was in the process of having her son committed to a psychiatric facility when he went on the mass shooting spree, a lifelong family acquaintance told Fox News.

A senior law enforcement official also confirmed that 20-year-old Lanza's anger over his mother's plan is being investigated as a possible motive for the Newtown shooting.

"From what I've been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed," said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place. "Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off."

It's unclear whether Adam's mother, Nancy Lanza, was really filing the paperwork, because court officials say that such records are sealed. But she would have gone through a longer process to get legal rights to commit an adult to a hospital or psych ward against his will.

UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that an unidentified friend claims Adam was withdrawing from his mother -- and the world -- in the days leading up to the killings. The person, who claims to be close to Nancy Lanza, said that the mother took Adam to a psychiatrist, but wasn't planning on committing him to a facility. Neither report has been confirmed by named police sources.

Nancy Lanza reportedly volunteered with kindergartners at the school for several years. Flashman said that Adam "believed she cared more for the children than she did for him." On the day of the massacre, Nancy was Adam's first victim. Flashman told Fox News that Nancy was also good friends with the school's principal and psychologist, both of whom were killed during the incident.

Lanza had also reportedly cut off communication with his father, Peter, in 2010.

No. He's a VP at General Electric, I believe. Not saying he can't snap, but he doesn't exactly fit the profile.

He was mostly an absentee father...it was reported that they did not have contact since 2010.

I can't imagine not having your father and brother around would help....however, i'm not sure you can really put any blame on them. For all we know, the shooter wouldn't see them or talk to them.

They reported today the mom may have just returned from some kind of mini-vacation to a spa resort and that she had been feeling more comfortable leaving him Adam lately....but this contradicts the possible motive i just posted, so one of them, at least, may be bad info.

sorry the thread is so long but has anyone explored that the mother put the guns in the shooter's hands on purpose. to go out and buy all these guns because of a divorce is crazy especially when you know your son is mentally ill.
