Thursday, April 10 Reynolds selects Braves over other suitors ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services The Atlanta Braves have signed ex-Astro Shane Reynolds to a one-year deal for $300,000, ESPN's Peter Gammons reported on Thursday. Reynolds The deal includes a team option for 2004 for $3 million. Reynolds already had a $1 million buyout kick in when the Astros released him on March 27. Reynolds likely will have a few starts in the minors to get back in form. The Braves have struggled on the mound this season with both Mike Hampton and Paul Byrd on the disabled list. Also, ace Greg Maddux has been hit hard in all three of his starts and has an 11.05 ERA. The Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers, Reds and Mariners and the Cardinals were also interested in Reynolds' services. Reynolds had twice agreed to deals with the Mets, but both times the commissioner's office vetoed the structure of the tentative contracts. Reynolds was limited to just 13 starts last season until undergoing season-ending back surgery in June. Reynolds finished 3-6 with a 4.87 ERA. Reynolds is 103-86 in a 11-year career, all with the Astros. I'm glad he got picked up, but not by a league rival!
I really don't think it will be much help for Atlanta. I like Shane but I don't think his 84 mph fastball is going to be very useful. CK
I wonder what it's like going to a team that you've been big rivals with for the last ten years. That's got to be weird.
I am glad he was picked up...I can't imagine going to a rival, but its business... I actually think Shane will do well in Atlanta...He possible couldn't do much worse than Maddox...
I would be quite surprised if Shane did well enough to get called back up by the Braves. They are smart by making him have a couple AAA starts first. I think those will really expose his weaknesses.
Just think if Reynolds wins his first start he'll have more wins than Maddux,Byrd and Hampton combined.
I can see the Houston tradition. He's going to be awesome w/ Atlanta and kick our ass for letting him go. Can't wait!!!
Well I hope Shane does good over in Atlanta. He is a good guy and I hope he can have a good year even though he isn't with us.
I think nWo's reffering to one of two things. A) When we lose players they get good. See: Kyle Hampton Abreu Lofton Schilling Johnson B) Even if they don't turn out to be all that great, some come back and hurt us with their new teams. Nelson Cruz got a win off of us. It seems like Galaragga came up with a couple of big hits to beat us last year. I'm sure there are plenty of other mediocre players that we've lost that have come back and hurt us that I can't think of right now. Every team goes through both of those problems though.
Rumor has it the Braves are also looking to possibly bring in Jose Lima for a tryout. Just a joke....but you never know....
Not to mention that Kyle guy. Damn, he only won 19 games one year when he was an Astro? That guy sucks. Shame he only developed after he left Houston.
