I don't know if the Rockets scouts are still keeping an eye on Brad Newley but he's has stepped up his game since the World Championships in Japan.

Crocs' Brad Newley headed for NBA: scout

BRAD Newley has been likened to former Dream Team ace Dan Majerle by an American talent scout who has declared the athletic Townsville guard a certain selection in this year's NBA draft.

Atlanta Hawks international scout Ron Meikle labelled Newley one of the “top 60 players in the world” after landing in Townsville as part of a global mission by the NBA club ahead of the draft in June.

He will study Newley's form in tomorrow night's NBL clash between the Crocodiles and lowly Singapore.

Meikle, who was invited to Townsville by Crocodiles coach Trevor Gleeson, said Newley, who is yet to nominate for the draft, could be a bolter.

“We have Brad on our list of the top 60 players in the world and the top 60 get drafted, so that's where I feel like he will be drafted,” Meikle said.

“Where (he) gets drafted? It's going to be up to him.

“It's going to be to the team when they work him out. If he has great work outs he could move up and it depends I think who declares for the draft from the college ranks, that's the other thing.

“This is a very good draft. There are a lot of solid players out there.

“But definitely, he is an NBA player. I guess it will be up to him when he does get drafted if he decides to stay or decides to come, they have that option obviously when you are playing in a foreign country.

“But to me, I definitely would not have come all this way if I didn't think he was an NBA player.”

Meikle said Newley reminded him of Majerle at a similar age.

Majerle, known as “Thunder Dan”, played 14 seasons in the NBA and retired in 2002 with career averages of 11.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

The sharp-shooter won a world championship gold medal as part of the all-conquering 1994 US team that included Shaquille O'Neal.

“I compare him to Dan Majerle,” Meikle said of Newley.

“(Majerle) came into the league in the same way, very raw, he wasn't a really good deep-out shooter but he kept practising and practising and just shooting and shooting.

“I think I had a fairly good discussion with Trevor last night and I know that he has incorporated that a lot into his practises.

“For him to make it in the NBA, he can play two positions. He can play shooting guard and small forward because he is tall enough and athletic enough to do that but he's got to do a better job I think, if I'm going to critique him right now, is to put the ball on the floor.”

Meikle said South Dragons young gun Joe Ingles was also on the Hawks' radar.

His game resembles Manu Ginobili's (note: 2nd round, 57th pick) more than it does that of most Euros. He doesn't have the quickness or creativity of Ginobili, but he's a good athlete, and he actually likes contact. He held up well against a very physical (Denham) Brown. Those who remember how Danny Ainge used to play would recognize some of the same feistiness in Newley.

...Only three NBA teams -- the Clippers, Pistons and Rockets -- have gone to see him play in Australia.

both are from where i live... adelaide,

newley certainly has loads of talent, not sure about his committment to D, plus is a tad a headcase, was actually sent home for a few days during training camp before the world champs, pretty big fan of his own work

i'd go with Ingles.... the dude is lefty and great wing span

tell the rox front office to give me a buzz, i'll scout both them for them

Newley attracted major interest from NBA club the Los Angeles Clippers last season, the franchise sending out a talent scout to watch him play in three matches, while he also gained considerable attention at the Under-22 World Championships playing for Australia in Argentina last year.

...since the August tournament, the Crocs had been contacted by numerous NBA franchises, including the Clippers, Houston, San Antonio, Toronto and Milwaukee, requesting vision of the 199cm shooting guard in action.

...From being known as an almost exclusive scorer, Newley has shown he is a more than capable defender and provider for his team mates.

Newley does not have the game to make it in the NBA, He had all of the publicity and momentum a year back but realised just how much he had to do after working out for several teams. In my opinion he didn't improve on these facets of his game in the nbl this season.

Newley wont go anywhere in the NBA. He might land on or two 10 day contracts but i cant see anymore. He's to small/light to be a 3 man and his handles and vision arent good enough to be a 2 man in the NBA.

Heck he struggles in the NBL. IMO he's only the 3rd best player in his own NBL team behind Rilie and Abney.

Ingles has a better opporunity then him. im Surprised neither went to college though, thats where the big opportunities stem from and you learn a hell of a lot.

After making some eye-catching plays at the NBA's pre-draft camp in Orlando, Newley is today working out with 2006 champion, Miami Heat.

This comes on the back of a solid display in front of the Phoenix Suns' coaching panel earlier this week, according to Newley's mentor Ian Stacker, who is travelling with the Sixers' star.

"Feedback again was very positive from a team which also worked him out last year and no doubt has a style of play that suits his open court strengths," Stacker, Newley's former coach at Townsville, said.

...Stacker, who is travelling with Newley, said that the youngster impressed in his workout for the Miami Heat’s coaching staff.

“Due to a couple of late withdrawals it was only Brad and Demetrious Nichols from Syracuse University who participated in the workout that was by far the most demanding of his sessions to date,” Stacker wrote. “The session included one-on-one drills and shooting drills of various types that gave both players the chance to display what they bring to the table.”

“Nichols was All-Conference this year at Syracuse, one the USA’s top universities and reputed to be an excellent perimeter shooter and athlete however it was very difficult to separate the two of them on overall skills. Newley was able to blow past him on drives and was much quicker laterally while Nichols had the edge on overall strength and power and maybe shot the ball the little better, but it was very close.”

Stacker said Newley made an impression on Miami Heat supremo and legendary coach Pat Riley.

“Riley commented on Brad’s feel for the game and the general consensus in the NBA now is that they like international players over the college players due to the superior experiences and focus on development the international players are getting compared to the college game at this stage.”

Newley had previously participated in a trial with the Phoenix Suns, with Stacker describing the young South Australian’s performance as “impressive”.

“In a group that included Jared Jordan (Marist College), Javaris Crittenton (Georgia Tech) and Sun Yue (China) Newley shot the ball and shared wins in the one-on-one drills with Crittenton,” Stacker reported.

“Feedback again was very positive from a team who also worked him out last year and no doubt has a style of play that suits his open court strengths.”

Newley will now travel to Philadelphia for a couple of days before participating in a trial for the Minnesota Timberwolves on June 18 prior to the NBA Draft on June 28.

"This session was very different to the other work outs Newley has been involved in with more emphasis placed on seeing how the players fitted in to and picked up the triangle offense Jackon's teams have run since his days in Chicago. The players also did the regular one on one and two on two contests but significant time was spent on the cuts and options the triangle offers."

"Newley held his own with the high level of talent on the floor with no one player standing out above the rest, so it is now on to Cleveland for his last work out with the Cavs on Saturday," added Stacker.

Newley recently worked out for the Minnesota Timberwolves with Demetris Nichols (Syracuse University), Adam Haluska (University of Iowa), Carl Landry (Purdue University), Coleman Collins (Virginia Tech) and another unidentified player. He also trained for the Dallas Mavericks along with potential first-round selections Renaldas Seibutis (Lithuania), Reyshawn Terry (University of North Carolina) and Dominic McGuire (Fresno State University).

Basketballer Brad Newley was at home with his parents and girlfriend when he found out he had been drafted to NBA side the Houston Rockets.

"I haven't seen my dad that active in a few years. He got off the couch pretty quick," Newley told Sportal on Friday.

"Just sitting there watching the tele today, I was just watching them slide and I was thinking 'surely some time now' and then it happened and I'm just over the moon about it."

"This definitely rates in my top three or four moments."

Newley, 22, returned to Australia earlier this week after trying out with several NBA teams including the Cleveland Cavaliers, the LA Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks but says he had a hunch he was Texas-bound.

"Houston was my best workout and I had a gut feel something could happen there but I was really happy to fall anywhere," Newley said.

The talented guard has played the past three seasons with the Townsville Crocs and represented Australia at the 2007 FIBA World Championships.

Newley recently signed with the Adelaide 36ers but is likely to head to the US before he even plays a game with the South Australian club.

The Rockets last won an NBA championship in 1995 but Newley is set to play alongside a new generation of Houston superstars including Tracy McGrady and the seven foot six inch Yao Ming.

But despite leaving Australia and the NBL in his wake, Newley says representing his country remains his highest priority.

"Olympics is the ultimate goal in my career. I've always cared about the Olympics more than anything, more than the NBA," Newley said.

Newley's next commitment is at a Boomers camp with the Australian team in early June but says he is can't wait to get started in the NBA.

"I've got a Boomers camp next month so I'm probably thinking a bit towards that but I may have to got to the States for a summer league game so I'm just hanging out, got my phone ready and I'm just waiting for the call," he said.
