There's no way of telling right now what Sam Dekker will become. Often we evaluate a draft in the early part of the first year and a few years later it looks radically different. But right now, it looks like the Rockets made a mistake passing on Bobby Portis.
The question is also if this team offers an environment for rookies so they can develop. I see no player on this team who can mentoring a young player.
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=266888 Sen89 had it pretty right. Cameron payne looks like he will be good if he gets some minutes.
maybe more like a batum?, ie morey liking a second round player more(dorsey/harrell) to pass on the higher draft pick?
Well, albeit too early to really judge like you say, we could equally say we didn't make a mistake passing on Jerian Grant. In the games I've seen, doesn't look very good. Tyus Jones is still 19yrs old, but also not playing much. Wasn't the board big on one of those two -- the draft for need pick? btw: Were the Rockets considering another PF? Or is Portis mentioned because he's the only pick in the remaining 1st round panning out, so far?
I thought there was a pretty good chance that he would be their BPA at the 18th pick, but perhaps the negatives outweighed the positives Positives: +Won conference player of the year (they seem to be impressed with that) Negatives: -Not undersized (6'10.5" with shoes) -Can actually rebound -No medical red flags On a serious note, I wanted them to draft a PF that would replace TJones in the rotation and Harrell may have done that.
Actually, even they drafted B.P. He will still be like Montrezl Harrell that hard to find the playing time. As a result, he will be like Sam Dekker or Montrezl Harrell in Rockets Uniform. In fact, I am pretty sure Montrezl Harrell has potential to have 1 - 2 outstanding games like B.P. this season. I think the most important part for these drafts is the team system (if it fit them or not) and the playing time they getting in order to grow.
Probably not another Kawhi but I'm willing to bet he will be way more productive than Dekker. I hated the Dekker pick.
All it takes is some injuries before we see what a player can really do. Dekker has alot of prove but how can he with brewer and ariza taking all the SF minutes.
I'm wondering what's going to happen 10 days from now. Would we do Harden & Jones for Butler & Portis? Would Chicago?
I mean, we did draft Capela and Parsons. I think overall we've done reasonably well in drafts. Most players don't pan out anyway and we haven't had high lottery picks either. You can't always find the diamonds in the rough, and I think we've drafted above average when compared to the rest of the league in the past several years. While Murray isn't perfect, I'll defend him on this one.
I see the potential for greatness in Harrell. He's not there yet, but he's got length, explosiveness and he's flashed a high skill level with those turnaround jumpers and his defense. If that jumper becomes a consistent weapon....watch out.
