Former big-league pitcher arrested for robbery Tue Dec 27,11:06 AM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - Former Major League Baseball pitcher Jeff Reardon was arrested in Florida in connection with a jewelry store robbery, police said on Tuesday.

A four-time all-star who earned more than $2 million a season at the height of his 16-year career, Reardon walked into a jewelry store on Monday and "handed an employee a note stating that they were being robbed and that he had a gun," Palm Beach Gardens Police said in a news release.

Reardon was arrested at a nearby restaurant and the stolen money was recovered, police said.

Reardon had 367 saves as one of the dominant relief pitchers of his era, according to Baseball Almanac. He logged 73 wins and 77 losses with an earned-run average of 3.16 in a career that began in 1979 with the New York Mets.

He also played for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees before retiring in 1994.

Reardon, who was being held at the Palm Beach County jail, played in three World Series and earned more than $2.5 million per season from the Boston Red Sox in 1991 and 1992, Baseball Almanac said.

Not if he blows it all on who knows what. Some of these athletes are really dumb, if they let any major investment firm manage their money they could live a very good life.

Thats the point though, he gets a montly check, so he isn't poor... he probably got himself into either a drug habit or gambling habit.

ESPN had a longer article on this...turns out that Reardon had a son and he died when he was 20. Jeff has had a tough time dealing with it ever since (as you could probably imagine). That is when, according to the article, that he started having depression problems.

It's possible to sell off your pension to someone. If he were to get a $30,000 a year, and he sold his pension for $100,000 because he needed the money right then, then after that he no longer gets his monthly check.

Since Reardon pitched on the Twins 87 World Series team there's been a lot about this in the MN media. According to reports here Reardon has been saying that this was due to side affects from the anti-depressants he was taking.
