Its not an excuse, no. I'm not defending it, but it'd be naive to think that people will maintain their false good nature when nobody can pin blame on them. Anonymity brings irresponsibility, irresponsibility leads to stuff like this. Racism, sexism, ageism, etc. are all prevalent in the internet society even when taboo'd in the real world.

Yes, that would be naive. But I still think people should speak out against it even when its expected, or else risk encouraging that sort of mindset.

If the complaint was that certain journalists made a bad prediction that would be equal criticism.

But claiming they made a bad prediction because of their gender is idiotic and isn't equal criticism.

What it comes down to is the underlying resentment a lot of football fans seem to have toward any female that writes anything about the game. It's bizarre. Go back to the Mike Gundy tirade against the female Oklahoman columnist in 2007. You ended up with thousands upon thousands of fans that launched a full-fledged campaign to have her fired, and in at least a couple of occasions, threatened her life.

It just boggles my mind how the average fan can't seem to grasp that Richard Justice and John McClain weren't gridiron greats, either. They came up through journalism schools, the same way female reporters did. They "learned the game" the exact same way. They're journalists.

The Bills article was unnecessarily inflammatory, but it's no different than hundreds of others written by male journalists all the time. Hell, Justice does it at least once a week with the A&M/UT realignment stuff. However, with males, the fans who write in are able to stay on point, instead of making it a larger issue and disrespecting the entire gender. It's sad.
