Options, man, options. Brooks may spend time in various small-ball lineups rather than just being designated a backup PG. It worked well when he and Lowry were the 1/2 or vice-versa...oh, but that was Adelman, so I have no idea how this new coaching staff will use him.
For the first few games i think mchale will alternate between the two. But come playoff time AB will have a bigger role in the offense than beverley, whether it's as our backup pg or sg.
I take it that this means that Lin will get some time at SF and PF now in Moreyland, since Lin can guard 1-5 anyway.
It'll be interesting to see if McHale goes with Brooks over Beverly right off the bat or if he feels like Brooks needs to earn his time. I can see Brooks come in immediately as backup shooting guard and then Beverly and and Brooks splitting back up point guard depending on the situation. Beverly will come in when we need a little D and Brooks when we need a little more instant offense. That said, Beverly has been pretty good offensively too and I haven't seen enough to judge how much better, if at all, Brooks is as backup. It'll also be interesting to see, when Brooks plays alongside Harden, do they use him as off guard or let Harden handle? Same question to a lesser degree when he plays alongside Lin. I could also see a small lineup where he plays with both, and Harden slides to the three spot. Those three with Parsons at PF and D-Mo at center would be devestating on offense, with 5 3 point shooters, 5 runners, and 4 who can penetrate. Obviously, the defense would be terrible so they would have to be spectacular on offense to make up.
If you put Brooks at the two, you'll have to take either Garcia or Delfino out of the rotation. McHale is running 9 guys as it is, without even counting Garcia. No way will McHale run 11 guys. Probably not 10 guys either. Currently: C: Asik, Smith PF: Motie, Robinson SF: Parsons, Delfino SG: Harden PG: Lin, Beverley Now, to fold in Garcia and Brooks? Maybe go small like this (though shrinking your bigs to find playing time for a small guard who doesn't play D is probably not even wise): C: Asik, Motie PF: Motie, Robinson, Delfino SF: Parsons, Garcia SG: Harden, Brooks PG: Lin, Beverley More likely, you need to pick one of Beverley/Brooks and one of Delfino/Garcia/Brooks for the regular rotation, and the two others simply injury insurance.
Have you watched Brooks recently with the Kings? He was nothing more than a 3-pt specialist who played bad defense which this team doesn't need. No way Brooks should get into the rotation unless Lin or Beverly get hurt. For the Rockets sake I hope this was nothing more than an insurance signing just to have 3 PG on the team.
I don't recall Brooks ever playing disruptive perimeter D for an entire quarter. Beverley has a better all around game. Not to mention the fact that his 3 point shot is already deadly.
I'm thinking Garcia is the odd man and will end up as the insurance guy. PG: Lin, Beverley, Brooks SG: Harden, Brooks, Garcia SF: Parsons, Delfino, Garcia PF: Motiejunas, Robinson C: Asik, Smith, Timmeh
Brooks is a 0 on D, doesn't run the break (though harden/parsons do/can), and Beverley has been spectacular.... Guy is hitting 3's at a high clip, plays awesome D, and goes 100% all day. However, he isn't the new brooks, and Brooks hasn't played for McHale, so, he isn't the OG, change the poll!
rockets might play beverly and brooks in the backcourt together. you know it's coming konowing small ball mchale.
I'd rather Beverley. He's already overrated in this forum, but he at least gives some effort on defense and he will try to pass a little. Brooks is just a pure scorer. A few years ago he was great at it, but he's not the same guy since injuries took some of his quickness. His quickness was basically what he relied on to score. Brooks is really a midget SG anyway.
