Im a junior in highschool and beginning to look at colleges. Anybody have any recommendations? The one's I'm most interested right now are: A&M, TCU, Texas State, Oklahoma State, SMU, UTSA What schools are the most fun? best cities to live in? attrative women? party schools? exciting sports teams?
I'll give my impressions of Texas State. It used to be known as a party school. The university has been downplaying that over the last decade while boosting its academic standing. Still, lots of partying going on. San Marcos is a nice little college town. There's stuff to do in town and Austin isn't much of a drive if you're looking for something else. San Antonio is farther but still not a bad drive. Drinking beer while tubing down the San Marcos River is a favorite past time. The campus is gorgeous. Attractive women? Oh yeah. Exciting sports teams? Eh, not really. Baseball team is good, nobody goes to basketball games. The football team is moving to FBS next year and they're expanding the stadium, but they usually don't even fill the 15K stadium they have right now. They average maybe 12-14K a game. What you might want to consider more is what you're going to major in, how good that program is at your prospective schools, and which of those programs benefits you the most. That was the determining factor in me going to Texas State.
You should drop out of high school and not go to college. Betting on dog races seems to work out well for people who try it. Do that.
For my money the best school on your list is A&M. Lots of great programs, especially engineering, and a huge alumni network in Texas. Unfortunately its a college town not a vibrant city like Austin. The sports are hit or miss year to year but once they join the SEC every game will be worth watching. They problem have the best overall sports on the list even though TCU and OSU have better football teams. Texas State is the big party school on your list. I'm going to pretend like you didn't suggest a school in Oklahoma.
I've heard Sam Houston is great for that though not 100% sure... Definitely a fun campus/college atmosphere and not too far from Houston if your the kind that would get homesick.
Gotta give some love for Texas State. Growing academically, beautiful town, and the best chances out of all the schools you mentioned for you to get laid. Constantly.
SHSU is a decent school for journalism, but it's not as good as it once was. If you're willing to go out of state, Missouri has a wonderful journalism program. On top of it all, it's a bigger school, so you'll get that traditional "college experience," the sports teams are pretty good and look to be moving to the SEC and that's actually a really nice part of the country.
