He does deserve one, but he's not a guy who actually can carry a team to the promised land.

I agree with nick. I also agree on his assessment on melo's D. Lackluster defender doesn't deserve Max money.

No, the only players who are truly deserving of the max at this point are: Lebron, Durant, Chris Paul and maybe Aldridge & Westbrook / Parker.

The NBA market determines player values, not this crackpot of a "coach"

There is this perception, that only the very best few players deserve a max contract. I disagree with that. The way the cap works the very best players are massively underpaid. Melo wouldn't be underpaid - in fact he may be a little overpaid with 25 million a year. But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve max money.

Melo is one of the few players that can be a true first option on offense. You could argue he is just behind LeBron and KD. His rebounding is very good for a SF and his defense is at least adequate. He is a player you can build a team around.

With the cap situation, you can fit 3 max players and some role players on a team. Does he deserve to be one of these 3 max players? In my mind absolutely.

Hayward is a whole different story because he isn't elite at anything - you might even argue he is not very good at anything, he just does everything well. To me that screams 10 million a year plus/minus 2 million.

Yes and no. He's talented enough. But he's too contempt with being on a terrible team, along as it's in a "big market" city where his wife can pursue her reality show. Players these dayz:rolleyes:

selling TV commercials and season tickets is the real metric, how much money the teams make with or without him.

See, that's where the comparison becomes difficult. Hayward's max contract: 63M/4. Bosh's Max contract: 85.5M/4 (or 88, which ever one it was). Melo's max contract: 129M/5. I think those are the reported numbers.

So, by the logic, "if Hayward gets a max contract, then Melo should get a max contract" is a hard one to sell. Hayward's full contract max is less than half that of Melo's full contract. It is not exclusively how much Melo is to make, but is he worth having that much commitment to the cap? Is he good enough to not have as much maneuverability in your roster? Is he good enough to take two extra solid players, a BAE or two players, vet min player, and some minimum/rookie players to where you want him to take you? Because, that is fair to assume that is what you are going to have to deal with under those circumstances.

There is also a difference in situations. Houston has a unique situation. They are a Bosh or 'Melo away from being a top 4 team in the league, and potentially a favorite to win it all. Whether we sign a player for 15 or 20M will not make as much difference since we already have a lot of things set up -- two other stars, Parsons, 2-3 solid role players (and in some scenarios, retention of our exceptions).

So, would Bosh be worth the Max if he were to sign with Philly? Probably not the guy you want to build around. But, in Houston, sign him up.
