AUBURN HILLS -- Shane Battier's face isn't quite as beat up as, say, Red Wings forward Dallas Drake's, but he's getting there.

Battier, the Rockets forward from Detroit Country Day, was sporting six stitches over his left eye Sunday courtesy of a Luol Deng elbow. It's the third cut he's gotten this season, 19 stitches worth of closure. He had been cut six times in six previous seasons.

Clearly, he's a bleeder.

"I have really pretty skin," Battier said. "Women tell me I have really fair skin. I thank my parents for that, but it's very delicate. I think Mike James hit it on the head. He said, 'Shane, you didn't fight a lot growing up, did you?' And I said, 'In suburban Birmingham? No, I did not.' I am paying for it now -- my modeling career is waning by the day."

His basketball career is progressing nicely, however.

After starting slowly in his second season with Houston, Battier has averaged 11.5 points and five rebounds for the four games preceding Sunday's. He had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks at Chicago on Saturday, knocking down four straight 3-pointers after he got stitched up.

"Yeah, I missed my first two shots and then made four in a row after I got cut," Battier said. "I don't really want to shed any more blood this holiday season, but if that's what it takes then I will go there."

The Rockets have today and Tuesday off, so Battier can stay with his family for Christmas.

"It never works out like that," he said. "I guess I owe (commissioner) David Stern a holiday card."

I've always had a thing for Battier, and I always thought it was how he played. Now, I'm not so sure.
