    The Dark Knight

This movie should be coming out in 2008 and will have to compete with Iron Man and the next Bond movie after Casino Royale. Hopefully it'll be one hell of a summer.

Batman Sequel Title & Casting Confirmed!
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures July 31, 2006

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama "Memento," which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller "Insomnia," starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on "The Prestige," with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick's "The New World." His other credits include "Little Women," "Portrait of a Lady," "Metroland," "American Psycho," "Laurel Canyon" and Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun," which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama "Brokeback Mountain." His other credits include "Casanova," "Monster's Ball," "Lords of Dogtown," "The Brothers Grimm" and "The Patriot."

"Chris' unique vision is what made 'Batman Begins' such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of 'The Dark Knight,'" said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker."

"I'm excited to continue the story we started with 'Batman Begins,'" added Nolan. "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."

Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.

BTW, Frank Miller, the guy who wrote Sin City and The Dark Knight Returns will be directing an adaptation of Will Eisner's the Spirit, (he plans to do it the same way Robert Rodriguez shot Sin City). If he proves himself to be a capable director, I hope WB gives him a shot at adapting the Dark Knight Returns at some point, though I don't think they would put it out until after this current run of Batman movies ends.

Uhh...not sure how I feel about that name yet. Is it really a smart move to go with a title without "Batman" in it?

I'm thinking something along the lines of "Batman: Dark Knight" would be slightly better, but what do I know?

When I hear "The Dark Knight" I can't help but picture Martin Lawrence...

The Iron Man/War Machine story would translate very well to the big screen, I think. People want to see that before, say, a Green Lantern movie.

Of course they do...I here Iceman is next and so is Aquaman...Oh snap, that movie already came out on HBO...

2008 is a long time and I'm not sure Brokeback Joker is a good pick, but he may surprise us...The best joker was JackN, but maybe I'll be amazed in 2008...man that's a long time...

I'm also surprised that they're still so early into pre-production a full year after that movie hit so big. I wouldn't want a rush job, but geez.

That's what I thought about Fantastic Four, but it did well enough to merit a sequel. If the genre is hitting, it's hitting.

i guess. it just doesn't hold my interest past the characters of bruce wayne and peter parker.

and i don't know, but i'm thinking there's more recognition of the fantastic four than iron man. just a guess, though.

I don't like Heath Ledger. . . very overrate IMO

IRON MAN - He does not MAJOR VILLIAN that everyone knows
    so
I suspect it will be generic villany . . like Ghost Rider

    Also
I doubt they use the Manderin . . . dunno if that is PC

If it makes anyone feel any better, the Supergirl movie has been abandoned.

That does make me feel better.

I'd pay to see a movie where Cal Ripken Jr. kills people with a baseball bat.

As far as the Batman movie...about the only thing I can see in Ledger that works for the Joker is his grin. Good Joker grin. But outside of that, I have great doubts that he can play a convinving psycho killer. Oh well, I'll just trust in Nolan, I suppose, he did very well with the first movie.

It's a title, not a person. Just like President or XXX.

Hmm I thought I already had a Supergirl movie?
It wasn't in english, and it was p*rn, but it was Supergirl!

(but yeah, there are plenty of comics that should stay comics)

Oh and I might be making this up but I thought I heard somewhere that Iron Man's foe was going to be Cap. America?
