1st ride was excalibur so it was a favorite. All time favorite was greezed lightning with no line. Either they let you go twice or you sprinted through the exit through the turnstiles for another go. If I had to wait through a line, probably cyclone. Least favorite: looping starship. Fook that ride.
I think I developed my childhood fear of heights on the Needle. I remember that the sliding door had a little daylight between the two doors and there was no visible knob or lock. I just liked the freedom and fun of it all going with just my friends. Meeting girls, playing games, eating crap. It was just part of summer.
XLR8 and Greased Lightnin'. Honorable mention to the big drop on the Texas Cyclone and Thunder River. Also like that The Viper, while super short, had a loop. Freaking LOVE loops
batman escape was cool.sky screamer was a classic. i liked going to the big room you laid down and watched videos on the ceiling. it would show like being on a roller coaster first hand and it was pretty well done..the arcade there by it had tron. i knew a kid that got taken to astroworld jail. towards the end astroworld got a bit shady
The log ride where you dropped down and got soaking wet was always awesome in the middle of the summer. Before that the alpine sleigh ride with the greatest a/c ever was amazing, but it got shut down. For some reason, I remember strongly the super swing mounted on two up pointed revolvers, the jungle boat ride, and the little antique cars where you drove around on a track.
Those cars are one of my first memories. I also remember squirming down from the bar on one of the roller coasters and hanging out in the bottom of the car. The 70s were a safe time.
wasnt it like the " river of no return" something like that? its interesting to drive by now it seems so small..they had dolphins in a tank and a lake with boats on it people doing tricks... ..to think of all that was packed in that lot. i like the entrance with the globes and the water. crossing the bridge or taking tram in it was like entering a new world. kids would try to scoop coins from fountain... if you go to disneyland you will find parts that were lifted straight from disneyland at astroworld. its a weird feeling to walk around especially the western part of disneyland. i would say astroworld prime was 80-89 with peak astroworld in the 81-88 era
also interesting to note how much astroworld changed over the years. the map op posts I wonder what year that would have been. no sky screamer so im think before 88. also as ottoman notes some genius decided to take away the alpine mountain and ac. looping starship viper were later in some ways. i remember the year 8LR8 came out going on that as soon as it opened....must have been after 87 and was after op map. i could be wrong on dates.. even thunder river wasnt there early.. nice thread
It was called The Bamboo Shoot. Texas Cyclone in the last cart was my fav. It seemed like it came off the tracks sometimes. You could feel the whiplash when turning the corners better from back there also.
Bamboo shoot, Tidal wave, Mayan Temple and that one ride with the big tube were the summer relief rides.
My family was too broke to send me there. So jelly of the kids who got season passes. Had to settle for carnival rides. Once I had my own money to go, nobody I knew wanted to go anymore because the park became an out of control mess.
The only thing I remember is the instant caricature artists , had the silly picture framed For the longest
